How the (frank) are you going to write an article about team forecasts when the roster isn't even set ? If you are going to write an article in the summer about the line up you should at least wait till free agency is a week old..

Either really speculative journalism, a really weak smokescreen to make other teams think that is where the FO is heading, or the Hawks are already priced out of the market for anyone better.

Say what you want about midseason TDL, but with the increased parity in the league, fewer teams will commit to let go of anyone consequential unless they definitively know they are out of a playoff berth.

If Thornton, Marleau, Duchene, Galchenyuk and even E Kane are out of budget, its dumpster diving time.

The deals for Jurco and Forsberg alone when added to the overage the team has now means Kruger being moved is necessary just to bring cap compliance (not counting Hossa's LTIR).

Yes no problem.

I'd love to get Coutourier but PHI isn't doing that deal for AA. Coutourier is one of the best defensive forwards in the league.

Wouldn't really work on a line with Kane simply because you want to deploy them in different zones.

This guy transformed himself into a solid hockey player. Put up 100 points in the QMJHL and was taken high in the 1st round but the offense didn't translate, yet?, to the NHL level. So he concentrated on being a shut down middle 6 of sorts and is a solid useful player but at 4.3 mil per through 21/22 his cap hit is high right now. A tweener center that puts up near 40 points a year......No doubt though a nice player

Hossa's $5.25mil, Kruger's $3.1mil and Anisimov's $4.25 mil all off the books and Alzner could probably be signed with a Contender like the Hawks for $5.5mil....it's not impossible.

Unfortunately with the salary cap the way it is you're going to have holes somewhere. I'd rather have a team that relies on outscoring the other team and an occasional goalie bailout (not dissimilar to the Penguins).Then one loaded with defenders like Calgary or Nashville or that sits back like the sens.

Yep, tough with the cap even if you didn't overpay for a couple of your players and we know StanBowPops&McD did that a bit and for sure with the NMC and term. End result is you have to deal with the flat (earth) cap starting 10 feet behind the starting gate.

Thing about the Pens is they have the best 2 players to build their strategy around. When Go Johnny Go was a good bet to put up 65ish points the Hawks had a nice duo too. Benn and Seguin are a nice pair. .... As a rule I like balance (although that ain't working with MN) but as mentioned you have to pick your poison as the which holes your particular roster can best overcome.

He's a stay at home d-man (read: not much offense) so I think $5.5M is too pricey. But I will say something he has going for him - since he became a full time player in 2010/11 he has not missed a single game.

Really interesting interview. I've gained a lot of respect for him this summer. Also interesting to note the comments on doing deals with Kekalainen.

He's coming off a four-year, $2.8M AAV deal. i expect he's looking for a substantial raise -- wonder if 5 years, $4.5M AAV would do it? I'm guessing not, but one can always hope!
