Manson was drafted in the 6th round, so teams only passed on him, what, 5 or 6 times |

Can we please stop with this narrative that the reason he fell to #17 is because he had mono, and no other reason?
It's silly to suggest that 16 other teams didn't realize that his stats were affected by sickness.
C'mon, fellas. - Atomic Wedgie
Mono didn't help, but he fell for the same reasons as Kylington did. He's not huge and he sucks at defense and they started overscrutinizing that fact. |

You're not wrong, however I think the reason he dropped was the "unknown" linked to the situation you described.
How much of his drop in level of play was the result of mono? How much of it was simply him regressing and / or not developping as planned.
Fact is, I think Lucas has every right to be excited because he's a talented player and was worth picking at that point. - Scabeh
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the pick (although I fully admit I know absolutely jack-poop about draft-age players).
I'm just getting a little pissy at Leafs fans who are running around saying, "Oh my God, 16 other teams are so franking stupid, I can't believe they didn't know he had mono!"
I'm pretty sure the other teams knew he had mono. |

Not sure which mocks you were reading, but he'd fallen into the teens pretty consistently. There's a reason he fell to 17, I'd calm down a little bit. He doesn't have a clue defensively; he's a project who will be multiple years away, if he makes it at all. - isles10289
Thank you, I was wondering when the Islanders scouts would chime in.
Ill mark him down as a bust |

Yes and no. Just because he was chosen at 17 doesn't mean every team had him ranked as a late first rounder. Florida could have had him at 11 but Tippett at 10. Calgary could have rated him at 13 but Valimaki at 9 or something. Teams passed Liljegren because they thought at least one player was going to be a better NHLer than him. Up to him to prove them wrong. |

It's a pretty clear narrative. He caught mono and, as a result, he lost a lot of traction in terms of displaying his talent and development this past season.
It's pretty clear that a lot of scouts were spooked by his lack of progress with the big question being whether his perceived regression/stagnation was because of the mono or simply not being able to step up his game for whatever reason prospects sometimes falter.
Having said that, at #17 he was an absolute no brainer for the Leafs to draft. For the other GMs who passed on him 16x in a row, that question mark was clearly less attractive to take a chance on then other picks whose pedigree seemed more clear.
In a few years we'll be able to evaluate whether this was a colossal steal, a major bust, or simply a mediocre pick.
I still say we should be excited as hell though because the ceiling is salivatingly high! |

He has a pretty big Montreal Bias for sure
Also was really really high on Laine.. had him #1
some of the stuff he tweets is helpful but I am not a big fan of his work overall..comes off whiney and begging for subscribers to his poop.
Grant McCagg @grantmccagg 22 May 2016
Replying to @NickTML21
Laine may be 50- 60-goal scorer and Matthews a 35-40 goal scorer. Trust me..that's worth debating...at the very least.
Grant McCagg @grantmccagg 14 Jun 2016
Grant McCagg Retweeted Mike
Laine is a more proven winner than Matthews at this point..and hits a lot harder. also skates back just as hard.
Grant McCagg @grantmccagg 23 Jun 2016
I'll be on later....please ask q's about the draft.that don't focus on why I have Laine #1..they will now be ignored. Cheers.
Grant McCagg @grantmccagg 20 Oct 2016
That,..folks, is why I suggested before the draft that Laine could well be a 60-goal scorer. His shot is generational.
