That's what I would offer him, but maybe you're right and other teams would value him more highly. He's going to be 39 this year and I don't see him scoring 35 points again. If he thinks he can and another team thinks he can, then I would let him walk. New blood and/Or seeing what the kids can do is more important to me than seeing if Gionta can hit 35 points again. As for his respect level and leadership, I would say that he failed. From various reports, the location was a mess and it's a captain's job to either help fix it, or at the very least, keep it out of the media - jcragcrumple
Brian Gionta is a very well respected NHL player. That's regardless of the teams off ice issues.
It's certainly up for debate whether he deserves captaincy. But he's a quality leader and a quality person.

At least it wasn't Shatts for 7m or whatever his ask is.
Didn't like the Landeskog trade? - JVince11
I don't agree with 7Mill Shat either.
I like Landeskog but I don't value him like I do Reinhart. I think if Kane was removed, I would look into it.
Landeskog brings leadership and a golden boy version of Kane. With the same offensive upside. Rather have Kane and Reinhart than Landy and Kane. (Or just Landy)
Then, a 1st and a top prospect for Compher? Cripes. I like Compher but come on.

Fiest and foremost, im not disparaging his character. I habe no doubt hes a quality person. As for leadership, By most accounts, he couldn't bridge the divide between vets and young guys. There should be no doubt that he isnt captain next year. Many thanks for the past 3 years, but time to move on

As I'm getting older I realize men have a finite number of those available to them in a life time.
In other words, don't waste them on things like sports. - gcomella34
Disagree.
Its more like the number of beers you can drink at your buddy's camp on a hunting weekend. There is absolutely no limit other than what you can handle, at least until the end of the weekend. Then, its over Johnny.

Nothing wrong with not wanting him here.
My only issue is that if he is here, expect him to be on the Sabres the entire season.
To me, this McDavid contract shows that salaries are artificially low. If teams are willing to pay McDavid 13, then mid tier guys should be making more too. I think the NHLPA must be pissed when they hear he's making more than Kane, Crosby and OV without the cap going up - jcragcrumple
In his second year in the league, he had the most points. His rookie year he would have been up there if not injured. He is worth what those guys make for sure.

I didn't really articulate that well. The NHLPA vets must be pissed bc they'll get priced out or take pay cuts bc the young guys take up a bigger slice of the same sized pie

Yes I agree, but supply and demand. If Oilers dont offer that, McDavid can wait and someone will next year for sure.
How many other guys can say that? Just going to pick a couple. Mackinnon, Ekblad, Matthews, Nugent-Hopkins, Hall, Tavares, Stamkos, P Kane, Erik Johnson, Crosby, Ovechkin. How many of those guys would get $13 mil if in same place as McDavid (going RFA)? I say Crosby, but not any other. (those are 1st overall picks)
So being the best player in league in your second season is very rare and any team would pay for McDavid.

When Kane got 100 points, it earned him 10 mil a year, and now 100 points is worth 13 mil, so there is clearly more value placed on the points, but no cap escalation. It's not really a surprise to me that their revenues are stagnant when they don't care to put the best product available on the ice
