Fair enough. That Weber contract was insane with respect to how much cash he gets earlier in it. - breadbag
IIRC Weber was offer sheeted by Philly. Really backed NSH into a corner and had to pay big to keep him and IIRC they had just lost Suter to MN. |

Correct.
...And then they went and flipped him for the younger, better Subban. |

After Kruger is dealt it really only gives us a small amount of cap space.
I only see them trading AA if they can't deal Hossa's contract to a team that needs to get to the cap floor. If the NHL is fine with Hossa going on LTIR, and the Hawks were to deal him...they could then keep AA and sign a few free agents (Alzner, Sharp, Gagner being the names bandied about). However, I don't really see how Hossa's LTIR helps us much now if we have to LTIR him on or around first day of season. Yeah...we have cap space to play with at that point...but most teams will be settled with their players on opening day and will not want to make a trade. It's a perplexing situation. |

I don't know about that...
It's funny, when he was in MTL, Subban was THE guy, but not so much in Nashville.
I know the Preds have a good defensive group and the argument is that because of that, he doesn't need to be THE man as much, but there were a number of times throughout the playoffs where it looked like there were opportunities for him to really step up and he really didn't.
In my opinion, the Weber-Subban debate sort of comes down to what style of Defensemen do you prefer? Not really who is better, because they play different games. |

IMHO, Suban was exposed in the playoffs - booming shot, will hit. However, king of the dumbarse blind backpass, too may cheapshots, not a true team guy... |

You mean the same 5 on 5 scoring they'll get from Saad...AND someone that plays 200ft, plays the PK and goes to the traffic areas without the puck? - PatShart
That's why I feel the trade for Saad was more a matter of making up for the loss of Hossa then anything else. |

These playoffs sort of opened my eyes.
Interesting how he was disciplined a couple times this year for embellishment, too.

Subban was extremely effective, largely shutting down opponents. Shea Weber is a cannon, yes, but he's also very slow. Mobility, to me, is the most important trait a defense can have.

Stay-at-home Defenseman (Weber) versus puck-moving Defenseman (Subban).
I think the best teams have a blend of these types.

Loss of Hossa, plays a north/south game as a LW - which compliments Toews' game, size, speed, his play is playoff suited (goes to the tough areas, engages other team's defence) |

If AA and CLB are a match....I'd want either
For Ryan Murray straight up (unless propescts go either way...but that the center piece)
Or -
Calvert
Jack Johnson with 30-50% retained byCLB |

......This is exactly the opposite of what I saw from him.
I mean, Toews, Tarasenko and Getzlaf managed only 3 goals combined vs him over 16 games.
Hell, that pairing allowed only 6 goals against in the first 3 rounds.
Oh, and Subban had the best Corsi, scoring-chance differential, and high danger scoring-chance differential of any Preds defenseman in the post season.
And he won more loose puck battles than any other defenseman for Nashville, and was more successful at breaking up controlled entries against than any other Preds defenseman in the playoffs. |

rio,
Thanks for your support and presence here.
This is the second "oldie but goodie" someone has gone back and dug up theist couple of days (other was on Twitter).
Funny, you can predict some things (like the impending cap/roster hell) bot not necessarily which prospects would pan out and which wouldn't. Bottom line though. no, that batch of prospects was never replacing" the core guys, nor is the current batch.
This summer is another turning point. Bowman is getting back, relatively speaking, to cap reality, making unpopular moves but at the same time hoping to keep the team competitive. Tough job but he and the organization have earned that job.
So far, I give them an Incomplete grade. All depends on what they do here in the next couple of weeks at minimum. Maybe they can hold out til the fall or during the season to add another piece with Hossa's money. - John Jaeckel
Hey JJ....I know this is incomplete.....but in looking at Saad trade 2 years ago, kinda funny.
Saad gave us Anisimov, Dano, Morin.
Dano got us Ladd for a playoff run (ok...a first goes there too)
We got Panarin for nothing....just good prospecting.
Morin gets us Panik.
Now we have Saad back (OK, freebie Panarin gone....but still...)
We still have Anisimov to play or deal
We also have Panik as well
All-in-all.....Saad deal kinda worked out OK!!!!

Could you do pick/prospect for Patrick Maroon? $2M cap hit and EDM is going to be cap crunched as hell with McDavid. |

IMO the Hawks will regret giving up Panarin. I hope they can replace all the scoring that is now gone. - Savoy
The horse is dead and no longer recognizable, you can stop beating it now. |

hey, they might have to move some dudes now that they're giving McDavid that (outrageous) contract.
I'd be very happy to have Maroon! |

He was McDavid's linemate for a good bit of the season. Doubt they move him. |

Oh, I know why they did it. The amount of dollars involve in those first 6 years are still insane. 80 million dollars in those first 6 years of the deal. A part of me hopes the Weber retires early so we can see the fallout. |

Totally agreed. He is very well liked in Edmonton and a team would likely need to overpay to get him. |
