Personally I am not a fan of that at all. Hate that Winnepeg named their team the Jets. Same with the Cleveland Browns. If a franchise folded, completely different story (Ottawa Senators). But if they moved and changed names I don't think another team should be able to use that name. - tyweb69
I can see your point. |

Its all about the Benjamin's (or Loonies) - riozzo
True Winnepeg naming the team the Jets was going to sell a lot more merch than pretty much any other name they could come up with.

Interesting...
I occasionally look up the efforts of different people to get the Whalers back to Hartford. They're doing a good job. They had that big hockey festival a few years back.
I don't know why the league is so weird about Hartford and Quebec. Sure, smaller cities, but I feel like those rinks would sell out all the time.
How are you going to give Atlanta two tries and not think about Quebec or Hartford?? - Hank3Henshaw
How big is the Hartford TV market? NBC knows - and they know that Atlanta has a multi-state TV market for its sports teams.
Quebec - probably next, but I'm sure the Looney discount (under US$.77 today) is on their minds. |

It would be good if Despres could bounce back. He was a bear in the WCF in 2015 - kinigitt
Fowler and Despres were glued to Kane's line in the WCF. |

If I'm reading this correctly, the Hawks are hoping this decision will give them some freedom to do some things in free agency. Otherwise, it would not matter. - John Jaeckel
Well, if the league says no, it gets decided by a third party doctor. So, if his condition is real and well documented, he'll be on LTIR. Unless Dr. Nick Riviera is the 3rd party doctor... |

I heard the league released an image of re-alignment and Quebec was included in it.
Not sure if there's any truth to that, but it's interesting if it is. |

Plus, that's a lot of teams to split up that market. Hartford is just too close to 4 other teams, 5 if you include Philly. |

Well, I dunno about Hossa himself, but the others, why not?
I'm not here to attack anybody on this. I'm just saying the optics sure are ugly considering his contract looks as though it was built for exactly this kind of situation.
The rest is up to somebody else to worry about. But to say it doesn't at least LOOK suspicious is silly. - BINGO!
IMO, the contract was constructed --- under the previous CBA --- for Hoss to retire between '17 and '21, not cost the 'Hawks a ton of cash, get the cap relief and 'Hawks move on, albeit minus one of the league's best 200' wingers. |

......This is exactly the opposite of what I saw from him.
I mean, Toews, Tarasenko and Getzlaf managed only 3 goals combined vs him over 16 games.
Hell, that pairing allowed only 6 goals against in the first 3 rounds.
Oh, and Subban had the best Corsi, scoring-chance differential, and high danger scoring-chance differential of any Preds defenseman in the post season.
And he won more loose puck battles than any other defenseman for Nashville, and was more successful at breaking up controlled entries against than any other Preds defenseman in the playoffs. - BINGO!
He was in Panarin's head as well.
Subban is a tremendous defender and it was impressive that he went from being a run and gun all over the place Karlsson or Burns type to a system guy with a flip of a switch.
Incredible player. |

Regarding Hossa, I don't think there is a way the league could say no to him going on LTIR, unless they want a lawsuit from Hossa. I'm purely speculating but it could be that the league is interested in knowing how much of the issues was known when he signed the monster contract with Chicago.
"Did you sign this guy knowing he would "retire" due to this progressive problem". Not saying it is right or wrong, but it may be the league will decide to still impose some sort of penalty for him going on LTIR. It wouldn't fit with previous cases, but who knows. |

Seattle is next up, not Quebec.
Between the size of the city, the state of the Canadian dollar and the amount of corruption, there are far too many issues with Quebec City for a team to go back there at this point.
Seattle or Portland would be a much more attractive location for the NHL in my mind.
There's not a lot of new money to be made in Quebec. |

Oh for sure. Personally I don't see it. It doesn't smell like the Chris Pronger thing did. But there are going to be some around the league that are definitely going to ask questions. - BINGO!
Plus it forces the league to take stock in one of their decisions. To look back and see what they did: Make a rule to disallow certain contract provisions on a new CBA, when previously they signed off to those contracts during the previous CBA. Should make them look poorly. |

I'm in WA. The arena deal is the biggest hang up. Sounds like the Key Arena is getting the renovation. Projected finished in 2021. |
