Ideally we'd be able to put him on LTIR and trade him in a package with some prospects to the Hurricanes. They may have trouble getting to the floor.

Carolina has all of the above.... Just remains to be seen if they care about hurting Peter Chiarelli's feelings.
- BINGO!

Problem is they don't have the money. They are a floor team not a ceiling team

TSN hockey insider Pierre LeBrun reported the Panthers are committed to shipping out Demers this offseason, Florida will move him. Possibly this week.

If a team was far under the cap and traded for Hossa they would not need to put him on LTIR. They could keep him on the roster, pay him the $1mil in salary, take the $5.25mil and cap hit, with the condition that Hossa agrees not to retire before the contract runs out. It is a win for Hossa. He still gets paid $1mil per year for 4 years. It is a win for the Hawks who would get $5.25mil in cap space. It would be a win for teams like Buffalo, Carolina, Buffalo, NJ, Nashville who need to be above the cap floor and have no intention of going up to the cap ceiling. They would also get a prospect or picks.

Right??

Would you trade Hossa, Hino and a 3rd round pick for the each of the next 4 drafts for Phoenix's 4th round pick in each of the next 4 drafts?

Players on LTIR get paid. No advantage to what you propose.

Sure there is, not sure if it's enough but there's value. Especially when you consider Hossa is only being paid $1m each of the next four years.

I'd take him at 50% retained.

1m salary with 5.25 m cap hit is very attractive to a floor team.

He proposed a team trading for Hossa not putting him on LTIR, as opposed to putting him on LTIR. If Hossa can't play because of his physical condition, what would be the advantage to not put him on LTIR for the team that acquired him?

Hossa's $5m cap hit gets them above the floor. But actually only costs them $1m in real dollars. Although personally I think the Hurricanes would be a better suitor.

Ltir would only be if you wanted cap relief. A cap floor team would not want relief. They'd want cap hit with low real payout, like Hossa.

I think it doesn't matter. His cap hit counts if he is on LTIR or not, just depends how close the team is to the cap if they get relief to go over the cap.

Yeah, this is correct imo - otherwise LTIR players would be taking up roster spaces. Pronger and Bolland were both on LTIR with Arizona, pretty sure.

Anybody have a sense of David Kampf's game? Looks okay on paper. Another Rasmussen type guy? What about Martin Lundberg? I know he has little skill but I hear he can bang.... can he play D, forecheck?

If the next CBA retains the Hard cap based on HRR, then I would see other clauses worked into the agreement that would allow for contract re-negotiations, more buyouts, or the ability to exceed the cap to retain your "home-grown" players. If the league continues along the current path, you will see much like MLB the elimination of the "middle". At a certain point all teams will wind up like the Hawks, Pens, etc. where you have a very top-heavy roster. As players become core/star players and need to get paid, the rosters will get Top heavy and spots for the $3-$4m players will vanish for guys on ELC's or playing for $1-2m. That is just the economics of a hard capped league. Think about all the other leagues. The NHL stars make HALF of what top players in other major sports make. Top MLB and NBA players are over $30m a year, Top NFL players are $22-25m/season.

I have asked JJ for his thoughts on this subject a few times and never got a reply that I'm aware of.

With the current state and stagnation of the cap and no real growth of it expected anytime soon, I would hope there would be added buyouts or a contract "restructure" clause added for teams that are perennial cap ceiling teams. Certainly there would be a limit of probably one player that would allow a team a bit more cap flexibility. I just don't see the current format as a long term answer

True but different TV deals driving the salaries. Here is a snapshot:
League - TV REV - Total Players - TV$/Player
NFL - 4,500,000,000 - 1,696 - $1,326,651
NBA - 2,600,000,000 - 390 - $3,333,333
MLB - 1,300,000,000 - 750 - $866,667
NHL - 454,000,000 - 713 - $318,373

The $/player is at 50/50 split. I know there is more revenue (NHRR). this illustration is more to show the cap or no cap, the NHL has less to spread.

Nice chart, Rio.

I had expected a higher number for MLB, given the explosion in salaries in that sport, but double the games and double stadium capacities with ticket prices approaching hockey and basketball....

The othe issue is that the other leagues have multiple network contracts expiring at different time, so there is always a new deal funneling new revenues into the leagues. Hockey has basically no additional revenues coming in until the Rogers and NBCcontracts expire in 2022, I think - so stagnant caps until then.

Ugh, Hartnell, good guy but two years left at $4.8 million and he's pretty quickly becoming Andrew Brunette 2.0

If he gets bought out, would he sign for a low cap hit Like Brad Richards?

Another GM thing:

AA to NJ for Jacob Josefson and John Moore.

(Hawks have kicked tires on both players previously, Josefson is highly versatile, W or C, good on draws, can play in all situations)

And you save on the cap.

Fair enough. That Weber contract was insane with respect to how much cash he gets earlier in it.
- breadbag

I just hope he retires with 1 or 2 years left...Nashville would get crushed with the recapture penalty!
