Hextall doing what he thought was best for the team for the future and present lead them to selecting Nolan Patrick. So put that in your tank and tank it! |

Less than two per team. - MJL
Yeah, but how many players were 1 or 2 goals away? How many players missed their usual 25 goals whether it be a down year or injury? |

You could play that game forever. That clearly shows that 25 goal scorers aren't easy to come by.

This is interesting. The Flyers last season were in the bottom 3rd of scoring and were one of lowest scoring teams in the league at 5 on 5.
So tell me if they had all of the things that you mentioned happen and still had Schenn, there isn't the potential to score even more and at a higher rate with Schenn in the lineup than without?
Only on Hockeybuzz would adding improved depth and more talent and staying the same not be considered a setback from what might be with Schenn. The goal is to move forward and not have all the improved play result in the status quo.
No matter how you spin it, losing Schenn hurts the team in the near and immediate future and takes offense out of the lineup. The hope obviously is that by adding two more 1st round picks the Flyers can add to the future with younger players to extend the window. - MJL

I don't know building a championship team is a lot of poor management and random luck. Did the Oilers have a 5 year plan to suck to get #1 overall to get McDavid because of course the odds favor one team winning the lottery 4 times in I believe 7 years. Here s hoping Shero is incompetent and chose the wrong prospect. Part of the plan . Just need training camp to get here. |

No I am not at all saying it was intentional. He did move Hartnell for a reason. He didn't just get a trade offer and think yeah that might work out. It was a big miss.
However, I don't think anyone can say Hartnell would've been the difference for the Flyers to contend for a cup. The salary cap mess Hextall had to work through was happening regardless of whether or not the Hartnell trade happened.
The same can be said for signing guys like Bellemare and Gordon and Schultz. They were placeholders until the team could compete. We pretended to be going for the playoffs, and I dont doubt Hextall wanted to make them, but the ultimate goal was not to restock the Flyers for another run at the cup in 2 years (at the time). It was to draft and develop players so they can start to be competitive now.
If Hartnell is on the team and makes the Flyers better, which even if he scores more than Umberger I am not sure it helps W/L too much, the Flyers for sure don't have Provorov, might not have Konecny (but maybe have Barzal ), and what the hell they got lucky as poop with Patrick...but still. The last 3 years was the dark before the dawn. Who cares if they might've scored a few more goals. Unintentionally sucking as much as possible (for a team that refused to tank) was the most beneficial for their long term success. - YuenglingJagr
My biggest complaint about the Hartnell trade was exactly the same as the JVR trade. The return was far below what I would have considered acceptable.
Most of what you posted I agree with. There's no way to tell what would happen if a trade didn't happen. That's all supposition which was my point. I have to guage the trade on what was traded and Umberger was shot. If you wanted to move Hartnell for cap relief (which I think was mostly Berube who didn't want Harts around) then take your time and get the best deal you can.
No matter what happened in the universe after the trade it's still a really bad one. |

I know, I wasn't disagreeing with what you said. Just wanted to point out a couple of things always factor into a players' goal total, whether it be a better season per usual or down year, or even moreso how they're used. In your opinion, do you think Couts could get 25 goals if he was regularly in Schenn's spot on the PP? |

Pretty much, yeah.
Executed pretty poorly, might I add. They wasted a pick on Yakupov and could have had Galchenyuk, Forsberg, or even Lindholm or Morgan Rielly. They also could have had Scheifele, Huberdeau, Landeskog, or, you know, even Adam Larsson over Nugent-Hopkins. That said, even if they didn't get McDavid, they were still getting one of Strome, Marner, Hanifin, Zacha, Provorov, or Werenski. They got insanely lucky that the one time there pick was an absolute slam dunk no brainer it was Sidney Crosbys successor.
Because otherwise, they've shown they're pretty much inept when it comes to drafting. Just look at how many players they've had become NHLers from later rounds in the past 5-7 years. There's almost none, and the notable ones have played majority of their NHL games with other teams.
