All 11 of those forwards were under 25 at the start of the season (Kerr turned 25 in January). In fact, I believe Poulin and Sinisalo were, at 26, the oldest forwards on the team which is just mind blowing! - BiggE
I always sort of assumed that Tim Kerr was perpetually like 35 or so. |

I believe Hextall traded Schenn because he or/and Hakstol wanted to move on from him. A lot of people complained about Schenn's 5 on 5 play and lets be honest, we have all complained about the one common denominator over the last 3-4 years....the players. maybe Hextall Felt like he needed to shake up the core and Schenn was the odd man out. this isn't about the short term. If given the choice of 3-5 yrs of rebuilding to have many yrs of success i am on board. I'm sick of the old way. 2010 was awesome but it was also a one and done. I can't say it enough that you win building thru the draft. Obviously you have to draft well but I do believe that is the way to go.
as far as Jake and Giroux, yes those contracts are probably not tradeable. Hextall inherited several really bad contracts he has been able to move and with kids coming along on ELC that makes the Voracek and Giroux contracts easier to deal with. I expect Giroux to be better and more so i expect Voracek to be much better. there is no reason why they can't be the veterans to the young kids coming up like Briere and Hartnell were.
Lastly the goalies.....let me ask, who are the best goalies in the league? Price, Lundqvist (obviously getting older now), maybe Murray? how did those teams get guys like that? The draft. Hextall has stockpiled goalies and several of them are highly thought of. like it or not because of how long it takes, that is how Hextall is choosing to build this organization. you draft kids and outside of a few players, it takes most 2-4 years to make it to the NHL. EDIT: THIS COMING SEASON we should see this:
Sean Couturier 24
Shayne Gostisbehere 24
Robert Hagg 22
Travis Konecny 20
Scott Laughton 23
Oskar Lindblom 21
Samuel Morin 22
Nolan Patrick 19
Ivan Provorov 20
when was the last time we had 9 kids under 25 on the team?
when was the last time the Flyers had this deep of a prospect pool?
I get being frustrated because most people here haven't see a cup in their lifetime. But when Hextall came in and said it was going to be about building thru the draft, well, it was going to be a longer process. - nastyflyergirl
You mean to tell me Couturier is not a 32 year old washed up no-good hockey player who has reached their peak?

He should have claimed more goalies anyway. Several teams are looking for at least 1 goalie. I think he'd have a much easier time moving two of Pickard, Ullmark, and Grubauer than moving two of Sbisa, Garrison, and Emelin. - mochoson
Agreed and what was with the Schlemko selection that he turned around and traded for a 5th round pick. He's either giving GMs preferential treatment or spooked himself with how many defensemen they selected. |

Seriously, why hasn't Hexy dont it yet? Both players are the same age and have pretty much identical contracts commitment wise. Panthers didn't protect Demers and were trying to trade him around the expansion draft.
Florida saves 500k in actual $, big for a team with an internal budget. The extra 500k in cap hit is negligible as they never approach the ceiling. MacDonald's contract is also a year shorter in commitment, and he is a lefty. Right now, they already have 3 right handed D with Ekblad, Pysyk, Petrovic.
Philly gets a righty that they desperately need and another 500k in cap space. Demers deal is also front loaded, unlike AMac's. So if 2-3 years from now if we need to buy-out or move Demers again, it shouldn't be difficult at all to do.
Demers is a better player than AndyMac, but by how much? I'd be willing to throw in a pick or a prospect to do it (3rd/4th round pick or a guy like Fazleev?), but nothing crazy. This trade just makes to much sense to me. - mochoson
It makes zero sense to me. Flyers have a bunch of young defense prospects that are going to be pushing to make the jump to the Flyers. There is zero reason for the Flyers to take on a veteran with a longer deal than MacDonald who isn't much of an upgrade. Let alone throw in a draft pick to do it.

I'm pretty sure that Flyers team was the youngest in all of North American pro sports at the time.

Obviously the cup teams hold a dear place in my heart but man, I loved those mid to late 80's team.

He and Myers both. Not sure who ends up on the top pair with Provorov when it all shakes out, but I really do think that Ghost, Myers, Sanheim, Hagg and Morin will all be top 4 guys.
 - BiggE
I worry about Myers concussions. I don't see a feasibility on keeping more than 4 of those guys though I think they end up moving somebody and keeping 4 like Nashville and they start drafting defense again next year |

I didn't say easy, I said not difficult. :-)
Well over 100 guys put up 40-60 points every year. It's not like they're trying to replace an Art Ross winner. - Scoob
Scoob, there were 62 forwards last year who matched Schenn points wise. A good number of them did not match his goal total of 25. So there were 30 teams in the league. That's an average of a little over 2 players per team. Lets use 50 points as a barometer. There were 94 forwards who scored 50 points. That's 3.1 players per team. |

Meant to add Simmonds in parantheses in my one sentence, that's my bad. It very well could be said about him, but i did not mean to dismiss Schenn's skill as a whole, just that i think it's being overblown how difficult it will be to replicate / replace his points and production. We obviously won't see any validity to my argument/point until we see Schenn's replacement on the 1st unit this season. Let's revisit then - arichardson22
If it's not that difficult, why don't the Flyers and the league as a whole have a lot more 25 goal, 50+ point players in the lineup? |

I don't think any player will increase his production (or, for a rookie produce) to match Schenn. However, with even mild increases from Giroux/Voracek/Ghost/Provorov, coupled with hopefully some more skill-oriented players replacing some players (Lindblom/Patrick/Sanheim/), the team goal total should hopefully increase overall, while saving them some money long term, when both Provorov and Simmonds are due raises. |

Yep, but I still believe this coming season the team will be able to cover his lost production. |

I liked Schenn and I wasn't one of the people who discounted his production despite most being on the PP. goals are goals. I just believe he was the core member who was always going to be the one to be traded |

It's on the high side of expectations but I wouldn't say it's completely unrealistic for Konecny to break in and get close to what Schenn was producing. I'd expect around 20 goals/20 assists from Patrick as well. |
