You're not setting a high bar there. Smith is a good 2nd pairing guy. He would've been one of my top targets for the Devils if the Rangers had let him walk in UFA.

Here's a funny fact: Shattenkirk's time on ice facilitated less offense from his team than any other 500min+ D on Washington... here's another funny fact: Shattenkirk's time on ice facilitated less offense from his team than three other St Louis d-men (Petrangelo, Parayko, Bouwmeester) at 500min+.

So that means that while Bouwmeester is on the ice, his teammates (including him!) were more likely to score. OUCH!

How does the rumor chart not have the Devils listed under Shattenkirk? They probably have the highest chance of landing him next to the Rangers. At least give them a 20% or something, rumor everywhere are swirling about the Devils and Shattenkirk.

Shat will be at least $7 mil for 6-8 years. I want it done. He is far and away better than any D man on our roster and is ready to assume a big role immediately. We have the money right now, why not? A shut down D man would be required also, but there aren't any worth going after at the moment. Maybe trade for one, but otherwise Shattenkirk is the target and should be.

Shattenkirk at more than 6 million a season will be an albatross of a contract in 2-3 Years. I'd rather we suck again this Year and save the money for possible 2018 UFA Defensemen, or make a trade for someone younger and better.

Don't have to look too far to see teams that crap out and not be a contender within 2 years, maybe they don't want to re-sign with non-contenders. Nothing is guaranteed.
