I miss Tim Murray - Matthews_Auston
Crazy as it sounds, he may have been the most exciting GM in Buffalo sports history

I've been saying this since the deal was made.
Wrong time.
People act like ROR was a once and a lifetime get
Top 6 forwards are available all the time, and we would have had the assets to get one when the time was right - sbroads24
Who were the team's centers pre-90 getting traded here? It was a hugely important trade. He's an excellent player who has played on terrible teams. |

Agreed, great trade that made sense at time, and still does.

Eichel, and that's all that mattered and still matters today.

It made sense if we were close to winning anything.
If we miss the playoffs we will have effectively wasted 3 years of a guys prime who we traded a ton of assets to get.
Makes 0 sense to me |

Eichel and O'Reilly joined the team on the same day. I was looking for answers like Girgensons, Connolly, Hodgson, Roy. |

Let me ask you this.
What would you rather have
O'Reilly +Nylander
or
50% chance at Matthews or Laine + any other top 6 center that has been available since? |

First of all, you're making an assumption that the team would have been so much worse without RoR that they would have finished at the bottom of the standings. Secondly, last year they started that stupid lottery system where the top-3 picks were drawn for. Toronto lucked out and stayed at #1, but that's a lot less than a 50% proposition. Long story short, I'd take RoR and Nylander. If this was the NFL and you were guaranteed to pick 1st with the worst record we would have mcDavid right now and none of this chatter even matters. |

We more than likely would have.
This wasn't 2015, we were only 12 points from the bottom. and even less than that from bottom 3.
I'd take the chance at getting one of those difference makers all day over ROR.
Hell, I'd take Tkachuk over him |

That laughable, were do you get 50% from, you have no idea what our chances would have been to get them, and what place we would finish in.
Here is what I want... to concentrate on what we have, not some stupid what could have been if we did not trade so and so.

We would have been a bottom 5 team, there was 2 impact players, both went to bottom 5 teams.
So, I apologize, 40% chance |

I think part of the issue was compared to most rebuilds the tear down here was way bigger.
for example as much credit as i give new leafs mgmt, they were fortunate that the left over pieces from the previous era while complimentary were far better than the ones we had.
They didn't/don't have to make an ROR trade because kadri was already there.
They didnt have to make a kane deal and find a d-man to go with it because they already had JVR and Gardiner (we had stafford and myers). - Sabresfan-365
And they somehow found a sucker for all their terrible contracts except Horton and Lupul, but they're LTIR, so that's only half bad. And they buried the others for a short while. And a poop load of young guys. |

Well since we know the results of the lottery last year we know that if Buffalo came in last they would have gotten Matthews. I know Winnipeg moved up into #2 spot from #6 from what I remember. And Columbus fell from #2 to #3. |
