I did and lots of people said I was crazy - GERBE!!!75PTS
Touché
However...
The prevailing thought was that it was Matthews as a "almost generational" type player, just a notch below Jack & Connor
And then a group of good prospects in the next tier
So Murray's thought process at the time was...
trade for O'Reilly
Or tank for Matthews
After we just tanked twice
And we'd have to out tank Toronto & Arizona |

No matter where we draft...
there's always gonna be guys we just missed on getting,
or should've picked instead
Same for every team, every year

bummed, not surprised though. I know we could(although depends on what butcher wants), im just not sure they want to.
It seems pretty clear that at least short term hes looking for lowest risk+highest value/upside. So that rules out guys like shattenkirk, alzner etc.
But they could in theory come out of this off season with two low end 2nd pair guys for the price of mike weber, which would be impressive and if neither worked out the price paid was a 3rd rounder. |

Were in on Shattenkirk FYI
Dreger and Pagnotta have said we have had talks. Tomorrow he narrows his list apparently |

This is an easy statement to make. Especially when you pick 8th every year.
I wonder if the Leafs will say the same thing about picking Matthews. I would guess not |

Idk if it's "clear" that's what he's looking for
Beaulieu falls into that category,
but that doesn't mean he's only looking for that
Maybe that's just all he could get right now

Would they say the same thing about missing out on a top5 pick this year?
Would Edmonton?
Was either of those teams in a better position to we than we were after we drafted Eichel?
This whole discussion is so arbitrary
We could lament a guy we missed out on in the draft every single year

we weren't in on any of the bigger names aside from shattenkirk but i think thats only cause its hard to pass up the opportunity to add a guy like him "for free" (although im well aware the cap number here could be...unfavourable). |

Ummm he was there when Pittsburgh signed Kris Letang until he was 36 years old
Not saying Shattenkirk is on the same level as Letang but he knows how to handle a team with several high priced players (Crosby Malkin Kessel Letang) |

thats what im saying though. They built that team paying big to keep their core and getting the most cost effective players they could to fill out their lineup. guys out of college, smart trades etc.
Letang, when hes not injured, is a #1D no question. Same cant be said for shattenkirk. |

I think the bigger point is that if he wanted Shattenkirk, he could find a way to make it work and still manage the cap. How much he wants him, however, remains to be seen.
Side note: they were talking on Sirius XM today about how a $13 million deal for McDavid would put him at about 17% of the Oilers' cap. That was about the same percentage of the cap as Crosby made up when he signed his deal. The notion that McDavid and Draisaitl would kill Edmonton's cap is completely unfounded. |
