Michael f'ing Stone just got 3 x $3.5. Schultz should get at least 6 x $5. - T-Train
I'm sure Dumoulin will get less then that. |

Schultz is the one guy who owes us a discount. Market price I assume is close to yandle. If they had the same contract would you trade Schultz for yandle? If he was in this free agency class would you prefer Schultz or shatty? Rutherford needs to hammer him on what he owes us and that 30 million is still a lot of money. |

Jokinen as a spare part is very intriguing. Guy can move all over the lineup. Don't think I'd be thrilled if he was added to be the 3C, but as a 4C/LW guy who moves around the lineup he'd be a nice add. |

He helped them win 2 Cups and doubt they get the second without him so think he's paid his debt.
Yohe said his price is around 5M. Should not be a problem, that's fair for both sides. |

Agree with this. Bring him in as the 4C and make a trade for the 3C. Gives you lots of options. Jussi had 60pts in 15/16. |

I can't remember which reporter said it.... But they said Sprong has looked really, really good at the rookie camp. "Man against boys" was the comment. - madmike71

If I'm Dumo's agent, I'm letting the Pens know that Dumo is a much better defenseman than Michael Stone, which they already know. |

I'd probably do that too. Maatta's skating is so underwhelming. I'm concerned he'll teeter between a 4d and 5d for the bulk of his career. If that's the case, he's over-paid.
I'd rather spend assets on D however. I agree with Vic about the short term of Duchene's contract. - madmike71
I mean with Shearys raise coming in. Would we rather spend 6.5-7 mil on Maatta/Sheary or 6mil on Duchene. Not saying anything is right or wrong because then we need to sign another D on top of that |

5 works great. If he wants money waiting a year for ufa and he could go a good bit higher with a second good year. |

Yeah, that would be really ideal. I like him much better than Rowney at 4C. It would probably push Rowney out of the lineup unless he comes in as a 4C fill-in as there is currently a logjam at RW, Rowney's other position. |

And if I am GMJR I tell him that the same team/GM gave Deryk Engelland $8.75 million over 3 years so that isn't much to go on. |

True. I'm guessing agents and, should it get that point, arbitrators, probably go with an average and not one-offs.
Calgary doesn't seem to know what they're doing when it come to evaluating/valuing defensemen. I don't think Hamonic is a very good defenseman. Maybe we could send them Maatta+ for one of their top 3. |

Dk's site has a Ruth interview. Sounds like he has his sights set on trading for a 3rd line center. He has 5 guys he's focused on.
Also adding a FA dman. - madmike71
I don't like trading for the 3rd line center... the good ones are going to be very overpriced due to the soft market this year, and the average ones are no better than what Jussi or Bonino could bring to the table IMO. Unless its one on a very low cap hit for a few years, why waste the assets on a trade?
FA Dman... meh... don't love it or hate it. Think we all expected that since not doing so meant either Pouliot or Ruhwedal is our 6th Dman. Corrado did not look bad at all the two games he was up with the club but I feel the need to have someone with some established experience in their career for the bottom pairing. |

How else do you propose they fill the 3rd line center role? It has been reported that Bonino informed the Pens, he won't be back. Looks like trading for one is really the only option. |

Yeah, I think there's only a handful of realistic FA options, so if they don't like any of those, then the trade route is the only way.
Speaking of cost, FAs typically get paid a lot (often more than they're worth). At least with a trade, you have the chance of getting a player under contract at a reasonable rate and term. Of course, you have to give up assets to get it. But I'm sure JR has a good handle on who the spare/replaceable parts are. I'm sure there's a team out there in need of a RW that the Pens have too many of. |

That's the thing...they aren't trading Maatta because then they need to sign 2 D if they do. If anyone gets traded it's Sheary. |

Agreed - unless it's a larger trade to include Barrie or there is another trade in place where we net a dman. I think the Pens getting Duchene is highly improbable. It would be $6 mil for a 3C playing 3rd line minutes (in addition to PP, but probably 2nd PP unit unless you want three centers on the top PP unit). None of it makes sense. |

It's a fair payment. There's too many comps to justify it. Every number thrown out here is what a very team friendly cap hit would be. I've been saying for a while a lot of teams have cap space now. Prices are going up. I don't blame guys for wanting to take care of their kids after they have 2 cups. I do think 300-500k below market is where we should be since I think it's more fun to play here. |
