He already makes 5+, he's not going to get a pay cut as a UFA, it's just not how it works with players like him no matter how it could be argued he'll get a raise.
- GilPerreault11

All that means is that Kane was overpaid on his previous deal.

The guys who have recently signed 6+ mil deals are a tier above Kane.

He's a 5 mil player. His current deal is what he should get, not what a stupid GM would give him on July 1

Did those players get to UFA yet? Not to mention you are not the most rational person to argue this topic. By the way:

3 years, $4.33 aav for Kulikov in Wpg

If he can get that as a UFA Kane can get and be worth 6 mil

A. Niether will Kane if we resign him before July 1
B. As far as Kulikov, two wrongs don't make a right.

If Kane comes out, has another solid year, scores 30 goals, 50 points, and stays out of the news, then he probably gets that

Signing a guy to 6 plus mil after a 35 and 43 point season is absolutely bananas, sorry that's just the truth

By that scenario Crosby shouldn't have missed the playoffs ever...

Garth Snow put together a crap roster and you're gonna say Tavares isn't a franchise center? Remember when Barry Melrose said Stamkos was no good? That's you right now

- Stripes77

Has he since his first year?

edit: it's not that I think Tavares is bad, I just question whether he's going to be a franchsie center going forward

Kyle Okposo had years of 51, and 64 points before signing for 6 mil
Lucic had seasons of 44 and 55 points before getting 6 mil
Forsberg had 2 back to back 30 goal 60 point years before getting 6 mil

Kane isn't worth 6 right now. But if JB thinks so...

so if gionta doesn't come back who do they give the C to? Pommer or give it to eichel/ror etc.

Anze Kopitar missed the playoffs last year.

Is he not a franchise center?

Tyler Seguin, Claude Giriox??

Using the playoffs as your metric is a flawed argument.

No way Gionta gets it. He gets an A if he comes back

If he doesn't Pommer gets an A and Eichel and ROR get the other A and C...

When Pommer is gone the other A goes to Risto

if this is in the context of bringing him here....he wouldnt need to be. You may have to overpay him like one, but these are the guys that are worth overpaying.

Botterill said him and the coach would decide on the captain. If Gionta is truly that ultimate pro him giving up the C wouldn't be a big deal to him. He should already know this isn't his team.

Was Risto an A last year? How about Okoposo? I know new coach/GM, but not sure how that works. Want Eichel (Star center) to be captain.

Okposo/Gorges wore an A then they missed time and Risto had it at the end of the year I believe

I wouldn't really call any of those guys franchise centers either. Maybe Seguin.

Franchise centers in my opinion: Crosby, McDavid, Matthews, Malkin, (hopefully) Eichel,

Wow $70 million of that contract for Price is signing bonus...they will never be able to buy him out...but they will be able to trade him when he's washed up to help a team get to the cap floor...low salary high cap hit
- Stripes77

As far as the buyout goes,
it just depends on when that $$$ is due
If most of it is paid on the early years,
a buyout is still very doable

Those types of bonuses are going in contracts now so that the players cover themselves if there's another lockout
They wouldn't get the salary, but still would get the bonuses

When I think "franchise" I think super elite, cream of the crop. Maybe it's just a difference in definition of the word "franchise".

Those guys are all #1 centers (give or take Giroux) but for me franchise is only a few
