it would make sense if the leafs were cup contenders next year but this contract is in danger of potentially being dead weight in year 3 which is when they actually expect to compete for a cup

This is the mistake teams make. Matthews will make guys like Connor Brown, Hyman etc 20 goal guys

Just like I'd bet Nick Baptiste could score 20 if given the shot with Eichel.
