Sakic doesn't seem to realize that an asset is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Loved watching him play, but as a GM, it's embarrassing already. - Muskwa

If I was Duchene, just don't know how much more of this I can take.
He's been really good through all this, you have to believe there's a chance he wouldn't report to the Avs in the fall. Then I think Sakic would get a smaller ransom becasue others knows he has to deal him. - flipneil

I absolutely see Montreal's interest in trying to get MD now that they have struck out on Radulov. MD is probably even a better fit for Mtl than Radulov, as the Habs have some wingers, but are desperate for centers. The thing I don't understand is why Sakic is looking for current NHL players in exchange. First, that limits his market severely because teams that are "going for it" are typically unwilling to weaken one area to improve another, and asking for a top 4 D limits who could possibly pay that price to a huge degree. Second, what good is that top 4 D going to do Sakic at this stage? Colorado is going to be bad no matter who he gets for Duchene, so why get a current asset and burn years of control over the player during a rebuild? Seems more logical for Colorado to ask for picks and prospects.
If Mtl can get Colorado to see the logic in that, they could maybe swing a deal. If not, they might as well stop talking. Mtl does not have an excess at either D or F to include in a trade for Duchene. Making a deal like that would move them side-ways for the most part.
Your reasoning is sound ... unless you are someone who is desperate to keep his job by not announcing to everyone your team still has multiple years of being bad ahead. |

" there are a few frustrated teams who feel Colorado's lack of leadership from ownership is hurting this situation and allowing Sakic to essentially take his time even though the situation"
can someone help me understand this? so what, a strong owner w leadership would get in the way of the GM's job? how does that make any sense? you pay the GM to do a GM's job which is to attain and retain assets to put a good product out on the ice to make the Owner money. if anything, the Owner came out during the offseason and reaffirmed his faith in Sakic which should mean Joe is free to do his job. do any of these teams complain when Poile or Yzerman take their time deciding on what components go into a trade? this idea that Sakic needs to be rushed into making this decision is absurd. chill the heck out.
if anything, I think these "teams" that are complaining and/or frustrated are the ones that dont have the assets to acquire Matty or want to get this type of player at some sort of low rate trade for scrap. Just look at the reported deals that have been proposed, barely any of them qualify for what Sakic is asking for. |

Even if Montreal gets Colorado to see that logic what can they offer?
First rounders will likely not be lottery picks. There is not one piece in the Montreal system that I could see comparing to what other teams can offer. How many firsts can you offer up?
Tough to see a fit there.
