The last time a Markov was on the Flyers blueline it worked out tremendously. That fleecing of the Canes back in 2004. - PLindbergh31

As much as I'd like Markov in place of Amac, I feel if Hexy really wanted to trade Amac that it would have already happened by now. Not to say he doesn't want to, but I feel he's tried and just hasn't found success. I mean if Hexy really wanted a "veteran" to fill for a 1 or 2 year deal, we could have just kept MDZ, who'd be cheaper than Markov. - arichardson22
Maybe he wants to, but doesn't want to retain 3 years worth of salary. I don't think Markov is coming here unless someone takes AMac without salary retention. |

I should have included he doesn't want to retain x% of salary with hasn't found success. But that's my point, if Hexy was comfortable with retaining I feel he'd be shipped out already |

Agreed. However, I don't think MDZ was a viable option. He's a bottom-pair guy who doesn't really excel at anything. |

I wonder if Hexy breaks Holmgrens balls about that AMac contract when they are drinking Mooseheads at the Skatezone. |

It's probably the other way around.
Hextall: I'd love to sign a vet D man to supplement the kids
Homer: What's wrong can't find a way to deal with the parting gift I left for you?
Hextall: *grabs goalie stick* come here Paul. |

Without Danny Markov, the Flyers don't get to within a game of the Cup Final in 2004. He was an absolute warrior -- on a banged-up blueline down the stretch and throughout the playoff run. The additions of Markov and Malakhov were huge for the Flyers at the time.
Conversely, they were very deep at forward and the injury-prone (set back two major injuries at that point in his career) Williams was expendable. Also keep in mind that the Flyers had Jeff Carter and Mike Richards in the system from the 2003 draft and also added R.J. Umberger's rights in that general time frame.
Obviously, in the long term, the Flyers missed Williams, who has gone on to be a valuable piece on Cup teams and Cup contenders. Markov was only here for a short time because of the implementation of the salary cap after the lockout plus some off-ice concerns with Danny that got worse during the year of no NHL hockey.
At the time it was made, though, it was a helpful trade for the Flyers. You have to look at the whole context of a trade. |

Nope, because it was actually the first big-club contract that Hexy was involved in directly negotiating in the weeks leading up to him being named the new GM to replace Homer. Hexy was fully on board with the deal. |

I'd have said "you're joking, right?" because it is a very famous film for just the reasons you mention. |

If the Flyers were actually willing to throw MacDonald or Manning in the AHL and use the other as a 7th dman, I'd be in favor of signing Markov, but only to a 1 year deal. He'd improve the defense and be a nice trade chip at the deadline if the Flyers are out of contention.
Regardless, it seems unlikely the Flyers had any interest. Markov appears to be using them as leverage. Flyers would need to move salary like Filppula or Read to afford him anyway. - PhillySportsGuy
They would need to clear more than what sending MacDonald down would give them. I'd only do it if they can clear MacDonald and a veteran forward to clear the cap space needed. |

Probably not the best of ideas for someone who has battled alcohol abuse.
I've been tough on Holmgren as far as his job as a GM. Give him a lot of credit for being able to battle that disease. Not easy. |
