Like I said, he can't lose. He either gets what he's tendered, or he gets more. If I could have a third party decide that my employer either needs to continue paying me what I am making now or more (and not less) at no cost to myself, I am doing that every time.

I guess there is a risk that my GM has an ego the size of Texas and can get butthurt rather easily (see Darcy Regier and Tim Kennedy), and can walk away, but I just don't see that being the case here, unless he gets awarded something stupid like $2.5 million.

A) Both sides pay their own costs in the arbitration. In the $2,500 raise scenario, that would be a loss.

B). The way I read the CBA, a team can't walk away from an award less than $3.5Mill (adjusted) so the only thing that could happen is that the player hears a considerable amount of crappy stuff about himself in the hearing, potentially damages his relationship with the team in serious way, but still gets the cash.

A.) The way I understand it (which could be wrong), many of the players' agents, who do the representation in the cases, absorb those costs because they get a commission on the salary/award. Like homie said, it's really a non-story.

B.) The team can buy him out like the Sabres did with Tim Kennedy if it really wanted to.

It is illegal for a lawyer (and agents are lawyers) to agree to pay the costs of a clients proceeding. They can be advanced, but the client must always remain responsible for the hard costs.

There's also the NHLPA.

Either way, it's very little risk to the player.

How many RFA years does he have left? 2 I think?
- sbroads24

2

27 is when a player becomes a UFA (drafted signed played type player not a transfer from the KHL)

He turns 26 at the end of July and I believe he has to be 27 by July 1st and he won't be after next season

1.) He won't make it to Arbitration
2.) If he does the most he would get is $1.5 million
3.) See #1

There is no reason to make this a big deal.

The one that I have been saying since it was brought up to worry about is Lehner. I could easily see him getting $5 million per.

Even then you hope it's only for a year (with his injury history that's probably what he would get) and then you still control his rights after next season. So he either shows he is your franchise goalie and you lock him up long term, or you don't.

Since Lehner is going to, could it just be the agent? Wanting / suggesting the best option for his client?

That's exactly what it is, for all 3 of them. You have an early deadline to file for arbitration, of which the actual hearing is much later. In most cases, it's merely there in case the player needs it down the road.

IF Lehner makes it that far which again is a big if every year dozens of players file for arbitration and last year only 1 player actually made it to arbitration.

If I had to pick one out of the 3 that filed Lehner is probably the one that goes because him and his agent think he is a $6 million goaltender (I am not saying that is what he is asking for)

I have to think it's a safe harbor as far as where you feel negotiations are. If you feel that you're close to term and dollar, you wouldn't file. If you're not 100% comfortable with where you are, you file for arbitration just to get a date set if needed.
