That's the issue. If the size guy's with grit and skill aren't ready then the skill guy's trump the grit only guy's in game of speed and skill that the NHL is dawning now.

Skill and Speed the new Catchwords?

The game has been played for over 100 years and tough guys are still needed . Almost every team has one except the Canucks.

If it is all about speed and skill how come the two time reigning Stanley Cup Champs just gave up a boatload to trade for Reeves?

How many times does one have to tell us that it is new nhl speed skill blah blah blah

By the time we catch up to a few of these teams that have gone this route the league will have changed again.
Just build a team with skill speed and some snarl quit this building or gifting roster spots to pussies.

- Reubenkincade

all this talk of pussies yet continuation of just single post retorts instead of replies....

A team that wants to protect generational talent can afford a roster spot to a nuckledragger. Teams full of mediocre talent need to find scoring on a 4 lines to produce the way the game is going.

The game has had changes over the last 100 years and the tough only guy is the latest to go. Systems, player development and rule changes accent different needs. Fights for instance are a rarity then the normal one per period a few years ago.

You want guys with jam and size but they need to have skill and speed and process the game fast enough to keep with pace.

If Benning is trading Tanev for one year service of JVR or Kane then he will be ran out of town. Wait until they are UFAs .

Give your head a shake guys. If you are trading Tanev think long term help , not provide Leafs cap relief.

Because a 1st and 2nd don't get them a D they need. JVR alone doesn't get them what they want. Whether it is Tanev or another D like him, they will add to JVR to get it.
- Retinalz

Then they should trade JVR for a 1st and a 2nd add another 2nd for the D they want.

I call bullsh1t to you tree huggers. Dude I have been watching the game since the age of 4 . That is 59 years . I laugh when I see these trendy things pop up and then all you fashionable people jump all over it.

It is not us older people that need to catch up ,it is you guys trying to chase the new
fancy fad that need to catch up and when you do it is too late.

Hockey has always been about skating shooting scoring teasing fighting hitting and
goal tending. When it actually changes us old guys will let you know.

Canucks again this year have a super soft older slower team and will be the laughing stock of the league until they change . Adding Rodin Sven Boucher Gaunce will do nothing to change it.

The talk about "todays NHL' and the style of play is just a myth. In 10 years we have gone from speed and skill (Pens and Chicago) back and forth with Heavy Hockey (LA, Boston).its just a bunch of copycats over symplifying things.
There are multiple ways to win it all. All you need is the right personel (talent) to be able to play into whatever system is detailed with 100%commitment.

A defensive team can beat a fast offensive team if they are better at their style than the opponent is at their own.

All the ding dongs who think you have to play Penguins hockey are silly, and dont have successful NHL coaching or management jobs.
The trick is to play a game that fits your roster, or make a roster that fits your game. Plenty of moving parts, thats why there is usually only 5 or 6 teams at any time that have it put together.

As an older guy who likes hitting and aggressive play I can appreciate toughness. But I recognize progression it's not about trends but fundamental game changes. For example. Helmets. First impact was safety. But it made the game faster where guys were less afraid of making moves of skill lest they hit the ice at speed. Now shields. Makes fighting dangerous to end career smashing your hand. Rules about fighting too is processing that out.

Goaltending equipment and defensive systems coaching has created offensive challenges. No longer can teams rely on top 6 players to only score and bottom six to pound and give energy.

Now the trend of speed is young legs having more spots because of cap. But the pace of the game to overcome defensive checking is not a trend but a progression. Watch the pace of the high flying 80's compared to today and you see the uptick of speed in the game plus the skill that comes with it.

IT is just a trend. The cap has little to do with it. Veteran grinders are as cheap as bonus laden ELC's.
We are only a few seasons removed from aLosANgeles/NEw York final. WE can be talking about Heavy hockey being the only way to win just as easily 2 years from now

The problem is you guys are still thinking Tom Stestio , Derick Boogard type tough guy.

You have to come up to the new type tough guy Maroon McGinn Reeves Lucic .

A team need team toughness and skill . Guys like Sven Rodin Boucher Cramarossa will just give us another 30 th place finish.

You need team toughness. Bo and Hutton standing up for themselves last year was a thing of beauty. I am sure Gadjovich will be a thing of beauty.

That's not the choice of personnel the Canucks face.

It's Megna, Gaunce, Chaput and DD over Boucher, Rodin, Goldy and Burmistrov among the vets. JV is the outlier who may not be ready like MacEwen.

Yes, as we said you need the grit guy with skill and speed. We are waiting on JV, MacEwen and Gadjovich to become NHL ready and earn a spot. Unless JB can sign one, E. Kane or trade for one with vet assets we have but not futures. A difficult task at the present.
