19 I wouldn't trade Kane alone for Duchene and Landeskog - let alone include Toews. - EbonyRaptor
I said 88 OR 19, not both.

They have very high excise and sales taxes. And if you're a rich athlete in Florida you'll be buying stuff.
Also, local taxes can be written off your federal form lowering your taxable income. You can't write off excise or sales taxes. So players in higher taxed states can lower their taxable income (thus tax burden) and also enjoy lower sales taxes. There are also contributions one can make, setting up foundations that can further lower your tax burden. There is a lot you can do to minimize your taxes. Another good thing is to start a business, an LLC. While you're getting your business up to speed, the investment costs can be written off and only when you're in the green do you start paying taxes. This is why you do see athletes, especially older ones or more savvy opening up car dealerships, restaurants, etc. This also explains why athletes buy gaudy, ridiculous monstrous homes that are 10k square feet with 8 bathrooms. Interest and mortgage deduction.
Guessing here, but Florida probably also taxes the poop out of their tourism industry, hotels, restaurants, etc. This is a neat way vacation states get tax revenue for services, by making visitors pay for it. Of course that allows a lower tax rate for actual residents, though they'd feel some burden when they went out to eat.
Oh yea, procreate. Get hitched. This helps on the tax bill too. but you pay bigly in other ways.
In the end it's a personal choice and taxes play only part of the role. Few people will live in an unsafe, poophole just because it's low taxed. I live where I live because of world class school system so I don't mind the heavy tax burden, a tax burden that actually helps me reduce my taxable income on the federal form. Of course, when my youngest graduates we'll move out of this county. I treat my local taxes as a "user fee" so to speak. - kwolf68
There are also complicated rules and agreements between states that will tax a player based on where he plays the games, so that players in low/no tax states don't avoid state income taxes completely.

RE: Prospect Camp attendees
https://theathletic.com/7...blackhawks-prospect-camp/
[From Scott Powers]
Alexandre Fortin, the surprise of last year’s Blackhawks prospect camp, will only be an off-ice participant at this year’s camp due to an offseason surgery, according to a source.
Details of the surgery are unknown at this point, but anothet source described it as “not serious.” Fortin, 20, had the surgery after his QMJHL season.
Some other notes on the prospect camp roster:
Defenseman Jakub Galvas (5th round, 2017) will also only be an off-ice participant due to a recent surgery, according to a source. Forward Freddy Olofsson (4th round, 2014) will also only participate in off-ice activities.
Forwards Artur Kayumov (2nd round, 2016) and Andrei Altybarmakyan (4th round, 2017) are both unable to attend because of a scheduling conflict with KHL training camps, according to a source.
Eight of the Blackhawks’ nine 2017 draft picks will participate in the camp.
Altybarmakyan is the only one not attending.
Seven of their nine picks from the 2016 draft are attending. Kayumov and Jake Ryczek (7th round, 2016) are unable to attend.
All seven draft picks from 2015 are attending. The Blackhawks don't own the rights to forward Roy Radke (6th round, 2015) any longer because he was not offered an entry-level contract prior to June 1. The Blackhawks had a two-year window to sign him because he was drafted out of the CHL.
Unsigned camp invitees include forwards Radke and Vincent Praplan (Swiss-A league), defensemen Joey Keane (OHL) and Brogan Rafferty (NCAA) and goalies Collin Delia (NCAA), Kyle Keyser (OHL) and Hayden Lavigne (NCAA). Keane and Rafferty are from the Chicago area.

Interesting about Radke. Does that mean he could have accepted or still can accept camp invites from other teams? Even without an ELC, he has an allegiance to the Hawks not only because they originally drafted him but because of his family ties to Chicago. |

I wonder what would be the reaction from this board for a GM of the Hawks who resigned all of these guys to a point where they'll all almost be done with their careers, having never won a cup, and also missing the playoffs completely.
Just curious - vabeachbear
I believe stanbo/ hawks cap issues showed everyone else the light. |

Johnson 7 X 5 ends at 32, stamkos 8.5 X 8 ends at 33, hedmen 7.8 X 8 ends at 33, Kuckerov 3 x 4.7 ends at 25 and is still a RFA.
I know they have not won a ST but you compare those contracts to SEABS, TEOWS, KANE, AA. the only won you could even argue over is Stamkos and Kane. IE I would probably take Kane or stamkos plus the extra 2 mil. - kmw4631
The timing of these at the ending ages are good. But I gotta ask --- and it was your condition, and a good one at that --- what would these contracts be if those players had won a title or two? |

Is there anyone on the board that thinks the Hawks can go anywhere in 2017-18 without a certifiable top 6 LW? |

Interesting you bring this up today. Yesterday I was looking at the Avs on Cap Friendly and noticed Saad (6 mil per) and Landeskog (5.6 per) are both 24 and signed for 4 more years.
Still haven't decided if I was given the choice of Saad or Landeskog for Panarin. |

Well if they do win a couple the next 5 yrs we know what their salaries will be cuz Stevie Y inked them already. In other words they win it next year and/or the following year no cap hell and no purges.......... Think that's the point the poster was making. |

I'm one who is a fan of Stevie Y but he too mucked a few up. The Callahan signing hurts and many think he was wrong to give bought out Girardi 3 mil per for two yrs. Still has to get Palat signed too. |

I think there's been a lot of hype for Stevie Y who hasn't won anything while playing in a relatively weak division. His over hype is reaching Jim Nill level |

Landeskog would be a distant third behind Saad and Panarin.
For the Hawks I believe Saad is the better choice, but for other teams (like Columbus) Panarin is the better option. There aren't any teams where Landeskog is the better option. Unless that team is shooting for the #1 overall draft pick. |

How well would the Hawks have done last year if Patrick Kane played in 17 games? They missed the playoffs the last day of the season with their best scorer out almost the entire year. Tampa, if they stay healthy, is built to be a serious Cup Contender for the next 5-7 years |

OK, let me put it a different way then, what would this board do to Stan for giving these guys these contracts for guys who continually are hurt and miss a lot of games.
Can anyone say it was a genius move to sign Stamkos for what they did as much as he's been hurt.
Say what you want, but 8+ mil a year is a lot to pay a guy, whose missed the amount of games he has the last few years.
Again, put all of the TB factors in, and Yzerman is a genius, Stan sux and doesn't know what he's doing, but Tampa made it to 1 final, and missed the playoffs, and he's signing all those guys to long term deals

You're asking me what the board would do/say? Go to any blog and fans female dog even when they win. ...... The way the question is presented I doubt you're asking me my response.
Stamkos before he was 22-23 scored 51, 45 and 60 goals in the NHL and with Toews & Kane running around making 10.5 per Stevie Y gets him inked at 8.5 long term? He then busts his leg and has some kinda heart condition and it's a bad deal? |
