Larsson is definitely NOT their best d-man. That would be Klefbom. Larsson is solid...nothing more, nothing less.

My point still stands.

I agree with your first two lines, but I still can't get on board with that deal.

Which way? Look at the results.
The Oiler's finally made the playoffs. The devils still suck.
The oilers found room to sign McDavid long term. Could they have done that with Hall still around?
I could also make the argument that Hall is not 50% better than Larson despite chewing 50% more cap space.

Sometimes it is addition by subtraction.I can easily make the same argument in the Kessel deal. What was the biggest return for Toronto? Well Austin Mathews would not be a leaf if Pittsburg had not taken Kessel so our biggest return did not come from Pittsburg in that deal.

Not all his value, but a significant amount. It's hard to trade a guy who can be a part of your core for years for a guy that will only be there for one.
- Tojo.

I agree with that. One year rental vs. core player with years of control going forward, even with $3+ mil more in salary.

Yes they could have. And it would have saved them from signing Lucic (who Hall is better than.) and Russell, who sucks. And Larsson (when they could have signed equal talent off of free agency that year.)

Leaf fans expect to package one or both of these guys to a place where they would sign as a free agent to land a top 4 dman.
I.e. Bozak+ a bottom 6 NHL dman (Marincin or Carrick), plus a defensive prospect (Maybe Dermott), plus an pick or a prospect. The pick round being conditional on re signing Bozak/JVR
We do not expect a 1:1 deal.
Tanev, Barrie, Vattanen are the names tossed around leaf land.

Otherwise they are deadline rental players like Brian Boyle. They will stay on the leafs as we will be a playoff team and if we deal then we'll be looking for rentals at the deadline.

I can understand that idea better, thanks, I don't know enoigh of what the Leafs discuss. It sounds lime the same type of trade most fans hate though where you trade a guy you probably won't keep and a bunch of spare parts for a stud defenseman. Tanev might be realistic.

Your thinking as a penguin fan. Everyone and their Brown dog wants to play with Crosbey. Oilers couldn't sign a free agent to save their lives. That's why they had to overpay a guy like Lucic and why they had to trade for need.

It's been the same in Toronto. Losing does not precipitate good free agents wanting to come play for you. The Marleau signing marks a huge change in perception for Toronto fans because it means guys actually want to come play here again.

Regardless of a team's circumstances, I think you need to get the best possible return for your assets. I find it hard to believe that Larsson was the best return they could have gotten for Hall. Either they overvalued Larsson, didn't appropriately value competing proposals, or didn't look hard enough to find equal value. There are a lot of other options than losing an elite winger for a non-elite defenseman.

I think it would come down to the pick and the prospect. Dermott projects to a second paring dman in 3-5 years. May be NHL ready this year. Also a deal like this only makes sense for Vancouver if it is a conditional 1st round pick. I.e. pick becomes a 3rd rounder if Bozak signs a contract extension. So a team like Vancouver is either getting a decent player long term, or a 1st round pick in the deal.

Not sure what is so elite about Hall. He is just hyped because he was a first overall pick. He's not as bad as Yakupov, but he is a 50 point player in the NHL. Not elite by any means.
Larsson went 4th over in the draft and dmen take longer to develop. He still hasn't reached his ceiling yet.

Bozak won't be available until the Leafs sign Tavares at the trade deadline.

So we will have to just get by until then. (Hmmm, imagine Tavares as OUR 3 C, guy wants to win???? ).

He scores at .84 points per game, which translates to 69 points for an 82 game season, which puts him at the same level as guys like Jamie Benn, Giroux, and Kopitar scoring wise.

Yeah thats what the devils traded for. The possibility of him getting more ina full season.
And what did he give them.
53 points.
After 7 seasons in the NHL, I'm sorry. he's a 50 point player.
Whether it's because he can;t stay healthy one year, or is in a slump another, fact is he's a good player but not an elite player.

Who on the penguins would you give up 1:1 for him? That answer will tell you where he fits in talent wise on a good team.

No way anyone trades Kopitar Giroux or Benn straight up for Taylor Hall.
The Taylor Tyler discussion has been long put to bed. Tyler Seguin won that battle hands down.

That's a lot of years for a guy of his size, playing style, and recent injury history. But a good AAV for his production. Not great at defense or faceoffs, though. I'm fine with the Pens not being saddled to that contract.

Will the AVV effect the Sheary contract?

What about Jvr and bozak for geutzel and Shultz?

The leafs derailed there ability to get a top 4 right shot deffencemen with there free agent signings so now they need to get creative.

Jvr for cal foote and suster

Then bozak suster and a affordable winger for Shultz

Shultz is the only player on Pittsburgs line of any real value concerning the leafs needs. As for loosing a center nylander should be given his own line so he can be payed in his next contract based on his performance at the position he is projected to play. Not to cash in on playing winger to a goal scoring machine. Just pay attention to the oilers situation with McDebt and drisitel and take pride in not being cherelli

- BrainSap

I'd rather go into the season without a 3C than trade either Guentzel or Schultz straight up for Bozak and JVR. Let alone both.

- Brianandr1

I don't think so at all. C > W (which alone probably negates a comparison since they play different positions) and Johnson has a four year track record of producing, including two years of incredible playoff numbers whereas Sheary has a one year track record and poor playoff performances.

I think Sheary gets around $3.5 mil for 3 years. Maybe $10 mil for 3 years, something like that. Hopefully $3 x 3.

I might be in the minority, but I don't think he or Dumo would fare too well in arbitration.

Leafs should just stay the course and let Bozak play out the season. Reassess his season and offer him a contract that reflects his worth to the team, at the end of the year. If you lose him, you just promote from within and keep your cap level down.

Granlund, Backlund, Little, Perreault, Bozak, Plekanec, Filppula or E.Staal could get the job done for us.
