Benning would do well to make a pitch for a package of analytics darlings Marchenko, Fehr and Marincin. The Leafs could take Tanev + back. |

As much as I dislike doing favours for the Canucks, I think your proposal is sound. |

No, Tanev is going to join his brother, who signed with the Jets yesterday for Laine and two firsts.

Winnipeg is rumored to shopping defensemen, not acquiring them. They signed Kulikov, so they might be moving Myers or even Trouba out. |

I thought it was understood that Brown simply will get his contract once the season starts? |

Myers value is at an all-time low, Cheveldayoff has a reputation for being nearly impossible to deal with. Supposedly refused significant offers for Trouba from the Bruins. I don't see an easy opportuntiy for the Leafs to trade with the Jets.

Insurance is an issue for an unsigned player reporting to camp. Leafs have to and will make room for him.

Call me crack-addicted, but I don't see Brown getting $3 million.
$2.5 milly max.
He has less leverage than Hyman. |

2.5x2 seems right. He's also still trade bait too. |

You can always get insurance.
So the Leafs simply build the cost into his new contract as a signing bonus.
As long as the agent and MLSEL management are on the same page, this is nothing to worry about. |

I'd sign Doan for 5 years, but only if we front-load the contract - I like the idea of him (maybe) not playing that final year.

True, but it seems that there are some deals in the works. They have to make at least one trade, probably two to get under the 50 contract limit. Not saying they are ready to go for the cup, but they are at a point where dead money has to disappear off the books. Not a solution to send $2 and $3 million players to the Marlies and take cap hits. Better to unload everything that is not working in your favour toward your goal.

I must be missing something, can someone tell me why the cap thing is an issue right now? Aren't Lupul and Horton going to LTIR? Doesn't that free up a butt ton of space? Or is it just the timing of when they are eligible for LTIR and when the leafs have to be cap compliant? |

I'm on board, Winsie.
To me, it's a no-brainer: the Leafs have great depth at the forward position, and our defence is awful.
Get it done. |

In a nutshell:
You can go 10% over the cap in the summer.
BUT
You can't put anyone on the Marlies in the summer to take money off the cap, nor can you put anyone on LTIR in the summer to take money off the cap.
So there's nowhere to hide certain salaries.
Like Horton and Lupul, as two examples. |

Toronto is $3.92 Million over the salary cap
I thought teams could be 10% over the cap leaving over $3+m available to sign Brown? |

Far from being a poop player. Maybe you don't like young hard working grinders. Hobey Baker award finalist, second in the league in short handed goals in his rookie season, good skater, strong on the puck. Compared to Matthews, yes a poop player, compared to Alexander Steen, excellent.
