Carol Schram: Vancouver Canucks arbitration dates set, Kole Lind added to Team Canada
The dates have been set for the Vancouver Canucks arbitration hearings with Michael Chaput and Reid Boucher, Kole Lind has been added to the Team Canada roster for World Junior development camp and a look at Manny Malhotra and Ryan Johnson as their roles increase with the team behind the scenes. - Carol Schram
Thanks Carol for providing blogs in the dog days of summer. Will you be able to or plan on attending the Canadian WJC camp now that there will be 3 Canuck draft picks there? |

Around 250 players will play in the WJC this year (another 250 will be on a roster, but not get to play in the tourney). That's over 16 players per NHL team, on average (of course, not all will have been drafted, but still). - stringerbell

What?! well be in a playoff position after 20 games, just like the last two years and then peter off for 60 games when the young and old guys can no longer keep up. well be good just long enough for the classic homers of this thread to start talking playoffs and demand TDL acquisitions.
Best possible Canucks season IMO: Brock Boeser wins the Calder, both he and Bo get 60+ points. We still finish well out of the playoffs.

So more likely we see Tree come back before we see Rathbone try to turn pro. File this pick under Rodin marination. Still not a bad gamble at that stage of draft and could be worth the wait.
But since he was so unknown and such a long term project couldn't he have been picked later in round 5 then round 4 at 95th? A couple power forward C/W, that were rated higher in draft, were still there in Adam Ruzicka (109th to CGY) and Ostap Safin (115th to EDM). |

We needed more D prospects by the time that pick came around.
Forward projects were unnecessary when need was for D. |

Rathbone was ranked in a variety of spots, including 78th by Bob McKenzie, 80th by Future Considerations, 105th by McKeen’s Hockey, and 128th by HockeyProspects.com
Needed a D and grabbing him at 95 seems like good timing, right in the middle of the rankings |

It was a great pick. Gaudette is a very similar situation, where the player wants to get a degree, hopefully Rathbone progresses like AG did. |

Rathbone is still in high school. Jim Benning and company don't draft thinking that each pick will be NHL-ready next year, or even the year after. I think the expectation SHOULD be when drafting, that most players play out their full eligibility in junior, and 1-2 years in the AHL, more if needed. |

Yup, my point was mostly that he played a position of need, and based on the rankings likely wouldnt have been available in another 31 picks |

He was ranked around 75 by Mackenzie which is typically the most accurate list. So he could have been taken one spot later. Not a reach at all |
