Rathbone is still in high school. Jim Benning and company don't draft thinking that each pick will be NHL-ready next year, or even the year after. I think the expectation SHOULD be when drafting, that most players play out their full eligibility in junior, and 1-2 years in the AHL, more if needed.

I don't know if you read the article to make this tangent. It's not about if draft picks are a year or two away from NHL ready. Rathbone can go to Harvard this season but is choosing to stay in high school. Not only that but chose not to play next level USHL for family reasons. The article is saying he's likely to be in college with rights retained until 2022. That's five years until he try's the pro route AHL or whatever.

His development path, by choice, will take a long time. If that's good or whatever has no relevance to the point that we won't see him for many years. With that known path plus how little he was known in hockey world. No one had video of him even.

Perhaps he could have been taken in the next round and have taken the higher ranked power forwards still available instead at 95. It's not like Canucks don't have any holes there and pressing needs.

Never the less, he's a great pick and we may get Harvard glimpses of his development in the years to come.

He was ranked around 75 by Mackenzie which is typically the most accurate list. So he could have been taken one spot later. Not a reach at all

At that point in the draft there were many picks Mackenzie had ranked ahead of him that were on the board. No reach to say he would be there in next round. Still good pick let's see where he's at in 5 years.

Yes we need everything. JB did pick 3 D in those later rounds. The last two not so unique. So maybe question if Rathbone would be there next round.

But no worries they are balancing out the prospect pool.

Next draft JB might lead with D the way the prospects are lining up for 2018.
