"Having a strong farm system is obviously very positive and the right thing to do. What I don't understand is when and how did it get so bad? Was it under Darcy, GMTM or do they both deserve blame? If i remember correctly, when Murray was hired, he said it was really important to build a winning culture for the organization and that started in Rochester. Didn't happen. "

Ithink this falls on TM, he dealt away the depth of young players to acquire guys like ROR, Kane and Lehner, but never made those key depth signings that Botts has made to fill out Roch. Guys like Griffith and Porter, they prop aren't NHLers but will preform very well in the AHL. TM seemed to be about razzle dazzle unlike Darcy, but Botts seems to be much more conservative and focused on a plan, I feel like TM was flying by the seat of his pants most of the time.

Speaking of that, what happened with cal O'Reilly? Was he that angry at how bad the team was that he was loaned away? Maybe his situation is more commonplace than I know

Well, due to years of lackluster drafting, 2012 I guess was the first useful year we actually got guys from. 2014 is TBD but doesn't look promising. So that gives us 12, 13, 15.. (16/17 exempt from this example).
Sam and Jack skipped the farm essentially. Grigorenko was a bust/trade chip, Girgensons was not drafted for his elite skills or lack thereof, Compher/Zadorov traded. So really the best talent didn't marinate in the AHL. That, combined with the inability to find more quality late rounders has burned the system. Truth be told it looks a lot better today than it did before the 2016 draft.
this bothered me to.. in one off season Bots made rochester respectable, that goes a long way in helping players like Nylander, guhle, baptiste and the others down there. without these moves these players would get all the pressure and that doesn't help them develope.. - IndianaSabresFan
