When I get back from Vegas next week I will be sure to follow up to see if the great Gaunce Crisis has been resolved or still ongoing? - VANTEL
The Gaunce crisis will never be solved until ever last GD poster in here stops plugging that sorry a$$ excuse for a hockey player into possible lineups and/or defending his so called defensive "ability" - but yeah mainly it keeps the trolls out too. |

So because an NHL player doesnt score much (or in this case at all), that makes him good defensively?
He was -2 on the season, of the 12 Canuck forwards to play over 40 games he was 11th in D Zone starts, and with the team ahead in score he had the 3rd worst Corsi rating. He also had less shots and takeaways than Boucher (who played less than half as many games) and ranked 10th among forwards in blocked shots behind Daniel Sedin
He was a treading water player last season. Mediocre on both ends of the rink - WhiteLie
You're better than that bud...
+/- is a useless stat but even if you want to rely on that how did he do in comparison to his teammates? Only Hansen +2 and Skille 0 had a better +/- of forwards who played 25 + games.
Of the 12 forwards who played 40 + games Gaunce had the best Corsi overall and while he might not of had a very strong corsi while leading as you posted he was still their best defensive forward by that metric so if you are going to judge him by corsi, cherry picking one of 4 scenario's is pretty misleading.
You are correct that he had the 2nd least defensive zone starts of all forwards who played 40 + games....he also happened to have the least offensive zone starts and the 2nd least starts period. Only Sutter started a higher % of his starts in the defensive zone than Gaunce.
If you want to compare his counting stats to Boucher's I think it's relevant to point out that while Boucher did play 30 less games than Gaunce he averaged almost 3 min more per game including 1:40 more on the PP than Gaunce.

Real people love me. You don't qualify as people - Nuck4U
I was at the beach the other day and something happened that caused me to think about you. It was hot, and sweaty and my kid kicked some sand, in and of itself not a bad thing, but a few tiny annoying little grains found their way into the crack of my asş where they mixed with sweat and other greasy materials to form what i termed an annoyance ointment, this is where you come in, this obnoxious substance was annoying and distracting, serving no real purpose other then to distract and irritate.
Butt I just wanted to let you know I was thinking about you buddy. |

I knew the +/- thing was going to discredit my argument to someone...
I agree Corsi can be cherry-picked, I chose "ahead" because that is when you defensively need to be at your best when you have a lead. When youre down, the opposition isnt pressuring as hard and in a discussion about being a good defensive player, I prefer to discuss stats that reflect that moment. I also would like to point out, his average shot distance is among the furthest away (same with his most frequent linemates Skille/Chaput) which would indicate that he isnt getting quality shot attempts, poking holes into his great Corsi rating
His D-Zone starts are an indication that he isnt thought of defensively, Horvat and Sutter are valuable on the defensive end and were used heavily in that manner. Gaunce's deployment is relative to his linemates, and not reflective that as an individual player he is excellent in that role
Sure Boucher's average TOI might be more, but I was referring to season totals, not takeaways and shots per game. Gaunce had over 200 minutes more

I think that Gaunce's defensive responsibility can easily be replaced with someone just as good, but who scores more often than say, the elephant man.
There are other options now, we shouldnt settle for Gaunce, we can do better. - Brooks_Light

I imagine you chose "ahead" because it fits the narrative. Gaunce was one the teams best defensive forwards if you believe Corsi reflects that, we have no idea what ice time is reflected by ahead, behind, tied and close but when you put them all together he comes out on top. Generally the stats community use "close" to determine how players fare in important situations, which he was 2nd on the team. When they were "ahead" was gaunce getting lots of minutes were they up by multiple goals, were those minutes played at the end of the game, beginning etc. Even with that info we know it is a very small sample size so again if we are going to use Corsi to evaluate a players worth, you can't just look at one segment in a vacuum IMO.
I think you are interpreting the D-zone starts wrong if you think that his low number of starts compared vs his teammates indicate anything other than he was played the least of any forward other than Skille. His ratio of defensive to offensive starts is still second only to Sutter. Henrik started 173 more time than gaunce in the defensive zone....does that mean he just plays more or is the better defensive player?
I know people get tired of this subject so I will leave it here but as much as I think Don is an idiot, his assessment of 1 goal in 77 games is a stronger argument than your breakdown using Corsi and zone starts. |

lol bring it on! I will debate anyone in here on why Gaunce should NOT be on the Canucks roster because he is a plug. But again, this franchise's fans continue to grow attached to prospects that lack skill, but have good intentions, or have stutters. Gaunce is not an NHL player, why are we even talking about him lol. |
