I don't
they are pathetic at marketing, probably the worst of all the sports in the states
the outdoor game is great for the hockey fans, but won't draw casual fans, due to college football
the sport needs to be on espn, in some form
the sport needs to be on prime time, nbc, one night a week
they need to have a vision to expand the fan base, and adding a team to vegas and say seattle doesn't give them enough for national growth - homiedclown
I agree with this. Hockey needs ESPN. Biggest mistake they ever made was leave ESPN for more money. That has bit them in the ass big time. |

I think if you get a guy like Adam Silver who tries to make his sport more fun, you would see revenue and interest grow. The NHL is run by stodgy old guys who are so out of touch with what the casual fan wants - jcragcrumple
100% Bettman is single handily holding back the NHL and its sad. |

I hate Bettman as much as anyone but let's not forget he is told what to do by the owners. |

Yeah i honestly have no idea about anything nascar. As for soccer, I'm 27 and most of the kids I went to highscool with LOVED playing FIFA and watching the world cup. It's seemingly very popular with millenials.
Cincinatti is building a $100 million new stadium in the hope of getting an MLS team
Nashville is considering the same - jcragcrumple
Yep... just had an international game here last weekend I believe.

when they update the players agreement with owners
they really need to be able to play an outdoor game on christmas to grow the sport, maybe 2 games (better chance to gain casual fans vs new years day)
have a new year's eve party for an outdoor game, followed by a ball drop
they need to think outside the box |

Sometimes the owners need to be told what's best for them. They should look at NFL money and ask Bettman to go get some of that. They're being shortsighted by attempting to keep the cap low in order to keep player salaries low. Grow revenue, and yes, you'll have to pay players more, but you'll make more yourself |

This gets overlooked by so many people...
Fans that boo him have no idea why they are booing him. He is the owners puppet. It's why he still has a job, it's why he will always have a job until he steps down on his own terms. The owners love the fact that they can have him booed all the time knowing they are the ones controlling what he does while the owner sits in the owners box smiling. |

The NFL is headed towards a work stoppage, there isn't a sport in the US that could pull what the NFL does.

Crazy that there is going to be a strike in the NFL, and i don't believe it will get resolved quickly. I bet they miss a season in the near future. |

Kissimmee (dump) and RDV (my rink we have 2 sheets)
Then a rink in Daytona
Then you have to head to the Tampa area at least an hour drive |

That kinda stuff would help...
But the far & away #1-100 thing they need to do is...
INCREASE SCORING
When the casual fan can tune in & see their team's "Crosby" scoring goals,
Instead of being interfered with, etc
That's what'll bring them back
Not the subtlety on how a 2-1 game can actually be exciting
The NFL gets it
Ppl wanna see scoring
They wanna see the Stars be able to showcase their talents
It's really not that complicated

The NFL, does but doesn't get it.
They can't figure out what a catch is, they are finally going to stop throwing flags after TD celebrations after what about a decade?
The NHL does need to increase scoring. The interference needs to stop that's for sure. The trap sucks and needs to go away.
Also watching a NFL game on TV is easier to follow opposed to a hockey game |

They didn't just leave ESPN for more money. They left ESPN not to lose money. When the league's contract with ESPN/ABC expired in 2004, ESPN tried to negotiate that the league itself would have to pay the production costs, which is unheard of for a major sport. ESPN pushed the NHL out the door because it was hemorrhaging money at the time. Ironically, ESPN is now in very rough financial shape because of the albatross of TV deals it has with the NFL and the NBA.
The NHL's biggest mistake wasn't cutting ties with ESPN. It was signing an exclusive TV deal with one company (NBC Comcast), something none of the other major sports leagues do. When Fox Sports launched FS1, it would have been a perfect time to negotiate another, albeit smaller TV deal. Hockey can, and is, surviving without ESPN. |

The day the NHL figures out a way to implement an illegal defense rule is the day you will see scoring go up consistently. |

Michael Pachla: US making inroads into Canada's game via USNTDP and NCAA - Michael Pachla
I will agree states has produced great players and continues to produce more and more players. but please don't include brett hull in that category. if im not mistaken Team U.S.A. was his 2nd choice after he couldn't make team canada at the time. and for that matter can you even lay claim to someone who's father is canadian that played his NHL career in the states. case in point the foligino brothers. one plays for canada and one the states. A kid with a canadian nhl father has a development highly influenced by his dads coaching. |

Of course the NFL isn't perfect...
but fans want to see scoring & their "star players"
The NFL gets that with all the rule changes to help WRs, protect the QB, etc
I agree... the catch rules are freaking dumb
Should've never changed from 2 feet down & control of the ball
And yes, hockey will always be harder for the casual fan to watch
But the NHL can institute changes that will keep the puck on the stick of the star players more... and that'll certainly help
I really don't think all that much needs to be done to increase the scoring
Enforce the rules
Make the goalie pads FIT
Those things will help a lot
Then just do tweaks here & there

I'm in the minority, but I actually don't think the officiating is that poor. It can definitely use improvement and consistency, as can every sport, but the comparisons to the pre-lockout "dead puck" era are way off base. Everyone points to 2005-2006 as the officiating standard because the Sabres benefited from it greatly. I often jokingly call it the "Leave Room for the Holy Spirit" standard, because it got to a point where just about any contact was penalized. However, the reality is, in the grand scheme of things, it was overkill. The league needs to find a happy medium between that era, and what goes on in college now.
Tweaking the goalie pads standard will help some, but the reality is these players are all so damn big right now, that the officiating gets a worse wrap than it deserves. |
