Sure, but if we have Kane occupying a roster spot and a decent chunk of cap, are we going to have room to find out if they can play or not?
This year is going to decide a lot.
If Kane blows up, and Nylander has a dissapointing season, and Middlestadt doesnt look like he will be one and done, maybe the convo changes.

Can we risk waiting the year to decide though?
Just for arguments sake (bc like u said, we go round in circles)...
let's say Kane would resign to whatever number you're agreeable to
Isn't it better to have someone here we KNOW can perform,
while we are developing the kids into players we HOPE can perform?
Pominville & Pouliot types are ok...
but let's be real
We aren't winning much if we are depending on them for major contributions
I don't think the $$$ is an issue like u seem to think
For me, his price tag is somewhat arbitrary
By that I mean, what's "too much" today is often a "deal" as the year's go on
The only real questions are these (imo)...
1) does he want to be here
-obviously don't know
2) can we fit him under the cap if we want him
-yes, but some more "dead weight" must be moved
If we decide to trade him...
3) can we replace his goals, especially even strength
-likely no, not immediately anyways
4) what can we get in return
-??? heck, if the return is good enough...
The only other question should be...
5) could we better spend the $$$ elsewhere
-maybe? Could Carlson be available on defense?
it's not like top pairing defensemen are often available
All this talk about whether he's worth 6mil or 5mil or whatever is all BS
Again, it's arbitrary
I'll stipulate that I agree with you that we'd have to overpay him
But we had to "overpay" O'Reilly
We will likely overpay Jack
Etc etc etc
Do we want him?
Can we fit him in the salary structure?
I say YES to both
UNLESS...
He doesn't want to be here
Or we have a better plan for the 6mil (or whatever he'd cost)
