D-men that make it to FA are there for a reason, if they are any good their teams would have then signed long term. - A_SteamingLombardi
Unless it is a players choice. With such a premium on legit top 4 D now, teams are locking top 4 D up early and for length. |

Has anyone realized that the next McDavid is 10 years old right now? Anyone have a 10 year old kid that could be him? |

Naw, every 10 years he is born. McDavid 1997, Crosby 1987, etc. So 2007 one was born and this year one will be born.
There can be super elite players like Laine, etc inbetween though. They are close to generational but not quite there. |

How many generational players have been born and had parents that couldn't afford to put them through hockey? |

He'll probably be a good player if he goes that route. |

Think of how much better the NHL would be(and how much more money they would make) if they invested into hockey leagues for 12 and under to make it cheaper for kids to play. Better players = better product = more money. |

NHL narrows it focus on CHL so they get a better return on investment. If there are 540,000-570,000 kids registered to play in Canada and only 700ish play in the NHL each season they would be spending a lot on kids they will never see (last season Canadians made up less than 50% of league). So instead they pay the CHL which cuts its risk by 500,000 players to generate its product with more predictability
I dont agree with how expensive hockey has become, but I dont blame the NHL for not dumping millions into kids that will unlikely provide a return on investment |

Clearly can see why JB isn't up for trading Tanev. - manvanfan
Dumo has proven to be one of the better young shut-downs in the league. |

This is pretty narrow and insufficient. The de Haan scenario for example: they have no more cap to pay. It's a lot more complex than you're making it out to be. De haan is coming off of his best year, doubling down on himself. |

they don't mind Foo's either, apparently Spencer is going on the first line in Calgary. Not a bad late pool pick! |

So let's see if they sign him next year or if they trade him away, they are not going to let him go to UFA and walk unless he's a bust, that's my point. |

He's already proven he isn't one they just couldn't afford to pay him, hence them wanting to avoid arbitration. Which is my point: it's not quite as simple as you mentioned. |

If he's proven himself then they will make room for him or get an asset for him. It's a shame they signed Boychuk as a FA and gave him 6 per and a NMC, that's some great management right there.
Not to mention Ladd for 5.5 for 6 yrs and a NMC. |

Totally mismanaged on Snow's part, he'll likely lose out as de haan stands to make much more on the open market. Snow gave away his leverage for a one-year contract. I agree ladd and Boychuk were bad contracts to older players. Classic poor Gm moves. now he'll lose some good young pieces as those two are unmovable IMO. |

Of the 700 players only 300 or so are really any good, the other 400 are there because nothing better is available. If there were more kids playing, there would be closer to 700 good players, the AHL would have better talent and both leagues would make more money. |
