It almost always does if done properly for sure. Newer digital recordings can be killer too but it requires a meticulous amount of effort to get them right. Most record companies now are too lazy and cheap to get the product out there with proper quality nor do they want to spend the time mastering it correctly. - LordHumungous
the reason for it is the material used. Imperfect reproducing of the audio is better sounding to human ears. Silicon reproduces the audio too well including all oddities in the sound and odd order harmonics, which is harsher on the ear. Tubes let through even order harmonics only producing a sound that is pleasant. Its why Tube guitar amps like Marshall sound awesome versus a transistor based amp.
With recording its the old reel tape that makes the warm sound. The flaw in it is that it deteriorates over time. Certainly prefer mastering onto tape but the current ease and convenience with digital is hard to pass up

For sure tubes bring something to the equation that transistors just can't. I tried for years to run an all-solid state transistor based system and eventually went back to putting a tube preamp back in the audio chain. I listen to a lot of vinyl still obviously and to me tubes are an absolute must for well-recorded vinyl. - LordHumungous
NOTHING sounds like tubes do.
some nice classics on vinyl through that tube preamp
btw do you have any idea why Vinyl seems to sound the way it does? |

the cap is going up. 15 million on your two highest guys is cheap for todays NHL. Also, your math is wrong, Koivu comes off as do a few others. I agree Parise isn't worth that money, but Suter certainly is. |

Very true. Many companies cheap out with materials and it IS a key factor.
However there are all Solid State companies that can get 'real close' to reproducing the sound of tubes without the tubes…but get ready to re-mortgage your home for that gear lol. And agree there is nothing like a good tube guitar amp sound.
Digital is way better now but still pales to the best vinyl rigs out there. |

Vinyl still sounds the best because they have not figured out a way to get past the lossy conversion process in digital fully. What I mean by that is digital to analog conversion or DAC's for short always have a lossy process in the chain no matter how well they are designed. There are always 1's and 0's lost in the digital conversion process 'back' to analog.
Vinyl is 'technically' pure analog so if the source tapes are pure and the pressing(s) and mastering to vinyl is solid there is no lossy conversion process in the chain and DAC to screw things up during playback. Now even the best vinyl will not eclipse the source tapes…but will come awful close if all is done properly in the mastering chain.
Vinyl is like the purest form of rib eye…digital if done poorly is like trying to turn ground beef back into steak with the conversion processes..if you get my meaning. |

have you heard Pono player yet? Xstream that Niel Young is pushing? I guess this is more about high resolution than anything, seems like a good thing as far as being able to stream music at a decent quality though.

Yes so by getting higher end audio gear you get gear made with top end DAC's so the lossy is much much less.
But My question was more like, considering an all analog setup thus no DACs, say cassette player, vinyl, reel etc many will pick vinyl as sounding more lively. So DACs out of the equation why do you think vinyl is more magical sounding?
I'll guess that it is actually the poorest grade of fidelity with a lower frequency spectrum and thus more pleasing to the ear. |

Who are your top 3 Canucks you hope get traded this offseason/TDL?
me:
1) Eriksson. The term, the hit, the age. This is just bad.
2) Dorsett. Guy is a trainwreck on the ice, overpaid.
3) Edler. Great player, great Canuck but time to let him go.
I don't expect any moves until the TDL, but maybe JB pulls off something with LV where trading Edler becomes something that could happen sooner rather than later. |

so they'll have roughly 20 million to sign Dumba and 10 other guys assuming they make no trades. |

Ya 'technically'. But there is some dedicated Solid State gear from companies such as Mark Levinson which MANY prefer over tubes. Mostly for convenience mind you but still it is impressive they can make SS gear sound that good. |
