Unfortunately have not had much experience with Pono yet but have heard some promising things. - LordHumungous
Hopefully startups like this push the sound quality up. Seems like the corporations (like apple) aren't too interested. |

Yes so by getting higher end audio gear you get gear made with top end DAC's so the lossy is much much less.
But My question was more like, considering an all analog setup thus no DACs, say cassette player, vinyl, reel etc many will pick vinyl as sounding more lively. So DACs out of the equation why do you think vinyl is more magical sounding?
I'll guess that it is actually the poorest grade of fidelity with a lower frequency spectrum and thus more pleasing to the ear. - SMBDragon
I still think it may be because top quality pressings on vinyl can still retain a slight advantage in information over reel to reel. Blows cassette away really even the best cassette has to offer. It's kind of an endless debate in the analog community…some prefer the best reel to reel over vinyl as it can 'mimic' the source tape a bit better. But for me I still prefer vinyl over reel to reel and of course cassette. I think the 'liveliness' you refer to in vinyl over reel to reel just exists in better mastering and pressings. You have to remember reel to reel production quality controls were much lower standards than many of the best vinyl pressing plants…which I think would be also a major factor. |

Who are your top 3 Canucks you hope get traded this offseason/TDL?
me:
1) Eriksson. The term, the hit, the age. This is just bad.
2) Dorsett. Guy is a trainwreck on the ice, overpaid.
3) Edler. Great player, great Canuck but time to let him go.
I don't expect any moves until the TDL, but maybe JB pulls off something with LV where trading Edler becomes something that could happen sooner rather than later. - neem55
Good list
i'd go: Sedin, Sedin, Edler. |

That would be nice.
Sucks that Apple isn't on board as they aren't even offering high res downloads on iTunes yet which is bloody stupid. |

the mastering should be the same regardless of the medium used as its the final product in the recording process long before loading the final product onto a medium.
Pressing etc is a different argument of course.
and ya cassette would NEVER be in the conversation for high fidelity unless maybe we are talking metal oxide. Its just too narrow of a strip |

Good points of course.
But the 'narrow strip' argument can also be used against reel to reel. The best 30ips master tapes are very very wide in physical nature where reel to reel is still thinner (more narrow) and can't retain some of the information passed on from the source tapes. So again this is where the debate comes in. Some believe the reel to reel is better than vinyl as it sounds 'closer' to the originals (because it's tape) but also many believe that when pressed correctly by the best of the older pressing plants vinyl could eclipse reel to reel in just terms of pure information. Tough debate either way.
But even the best metal oxide playback systems I have heard have never approached that of the best reel to reel or vinyl has to offer…just to limited by cassette technology and design and like you said…very narrow tape which is limiting. |

absolutely
personally I see nothing wrong with cd or mp3 but have to admit there is something special about vinyl (on a decent rig anyways, not gramdmas HiFi in the oak cabinet)
too bad its so noisy though |
