HA
Although unproven, I wouldn't part with Sprong. - Rinosaur
But you would be getting a capable of scoring 20 goals that could flourish even more on a real team.
This deal mainly intrigues me because it adds futures and getting rid of Green sooner helps tanking.
I really don't want to part with AA but if it helps the team in the long run it is the right decision. |

I agree it's a bad deal for NYI, but it's still less money and less term for a comparable player to Dumo. Term is supposed to bring the AAV down, but in Dumo's case, it didn't. Oh well, I'm not going to lose sleep over the Dumo deal, but I do think the contracts of Pesce and De Haan highlight that he got overpaid. - T-Train
No in dumo case it brings Aav up because the added years are buying out ufa years instead of rfa years.
When the added years go into a players 35+ years it brings AAV down because he's in his declining years |

It's a mistake to compare the deals that players get on other teams. Different players and teams have different agendas based on their other situations. |

I'm probably in the minority that doesn't think the Pens would have a hard time replacing Maatta. I view what he brings has very replaceable. Right now Dumo/Letang and Cole/Schultz are capable of being a very good top-four. The Pens would just need an above average #5.
Now, the only thing I can't get on board with on what you said is making any moves on the "potential" of someone like ZAR or Sprong. It would be a grave error to move him and then neither of those guys pan out. - Rinosaur
I'm no fan of Maatta, but you would either have to overpay in FA for scrubs like Alzner and Kulikov or give up assets in a trade. There are just very few top 4 dmen who become available and trading for them requires significant assets. And we know the Pens don't have anyone in the minors ready to step into that role. Cole is adequate but he starts to get exposed as his role/minutes go up.
I completely agree with erroneously penciling in players in a top 9 role, let alone top 6, before they have done anything in the NHL. However, we are deep at RW so even if ZAR doesn't pan out and we trade Hornqvist, we still have Sheary, Kessel, and Rust who are more than capable top 9 RWs. What we lose is the net-front presence, although Rust has shown he can be a pest around the crease. Because of this, I think it's a good gamble to take. |

Who cares about comparing McDavid? Can we get back to unrealistic trade proposals for a 3C? - Rinosaur

I don't have one. I was making with the humor. If I had to...
I'd trade Wilson, Kuhnhackl or a pick (depending on what DAL would be more interested in) for Devin Shore.
Shore played mainly 4C last year and put up very solid numbers on a pretty mediocre team. Can that translate into 3C success? I don't know, but it's a low risk/high reward move. At worst he's a very good 4C. |

Sprong, DP, and a 1st for AA - Feds91Stammer
With a 27 to 16 goals to assists ratio, being below average defensively, and bad at faceoffs, I wouldn't be surprised if AA gets moved to wing. If he were better in those areas, I would probably do it. 16 assists in 101 games is really poor for a center, even if he's only averaging 13 minutes a game. |

Dang, De Haan just got 1 year for $3.3. Dumo is looking overpaid every day. I like Dumo more, just not that much more. - T-Train
1 yr for 3.3.... great price for a year, but you get no stability down the road. thats a bad deal if he has a good year or you cant immediately replace him. They prolly couldve got Dumo for 1 yr at same price but chose to pay more and get some of prime years which include UFA. |

He is probably best suited for wing but playing with guys like Miller and Glendening make it tough to rack up assists. |

I don't think so. Top 4 dmen are top 4 dmen. True about paying for prime UFA years, but still... |

So scraps / marginal NHL wingers or a late round draft pick for an up-and-coming young center on an ELC with control? What is the motivation / rationale from Dallas' side? You could offer Wilson and Kuhnhackl and a 1st and Dallas still doesn't bite. Guys like Wilson and Kuhnhackl are a dime-a-dozen and can be had on waivers or free agency almost any day of the week.
This is why it's easy to criticize trade proposals but hard to come up with them. If the Pens have shown anything in their two Cup runs, is that center depth is really important. Any playoff team or team on the cusp (which is about 80% of the entire league) is not going to willingly part with valuable centers, especially young ones. |

Phillip Danault (on Montreal)
Trocheck
Pageau
Domi (on Arizona)
Here are some we haven't talked about yet. I would take any of them! What do people think of any of them? Can we get any of them? |

They are all great options but I think they would be next to impossible to acquire, especially for what the Pens have to offer. Bergevin seems like a crappy GM so who knows, but I highly doubt it. |

Danault would probably be the easiest of these to get, if Duchene or Tavares go to Montreal. They need A top line center to really compete, so they may part with a bottom 6 center if Montreal is able to cook up something and get a good top center. So, it is possible. |

I could see them doing everything imaginable to move Plekanec, including retaining or adding assets for lesser assets, before moving Danault. But they are in good cap shape even if no salary goes the other way for Duchene or Tavares, so moving Plekanec and his $6 mil salary would be unnecessary. Also note that Danault's hometown is less than two hours from Montreal, and that means a lot to the Canadiens. |

I think Pens' fans need to temper expectations on the 3C front.
Devin Shore, Zemgus Girgensons, Andrej Nestrasil, etc... I think these are the level of names you can expect at least at first.
I can see the Pens making a move that doesn't cost them that much via trade or UFA signing then perhaps making a bigger splash come the deadline if those guys don't work out. |

If we could get Trocheck, which I am positive we can't, I would jizz my pants.
Bjugstad might not be an unreasonable target though. |

I think GMJR basically said there is an option in place, but he is looking at other options. IMO, this means he is looking to try to get a very, very good 3C that would fit with the Pens. I'm hoping Now, he is looking for a young player that can play 3C but has potential to be even better or play multiple positions if needed for now and the future. As you said, he can always look again near the trade deadline to get more of a rental.

GMJR, bring the hometown boy, Trocheck, back to Pittsburgh!!!
I agree Bjugstad would be more realistic, but someone asked for unrealistic 3C's! I can dream can't I! |

I suppose those two factors could make him expendable. Who knows. |

Or maybe it just means he's trying to get a better option than his current? I'm sure he'd love to get a very very good 3C, but that maybe not be an option. You're extrapolating a lot from a simple statement. |

Yep, that's what we do in chat rooms! GMJR seems to get an idea of a player that he or the Pens want, and then does what he can to try to get that player (ex. Phil Kessel, Reeves, Hagelin, Daley). I'm positive we have not heard of all of the great players that he has tried to get. But, he seems to go after players that would fit the Pens style or fit a specific need(s). I believe if he has an option already lined up, then he is looking for a much better option. Will THAT happen - we will have to wait and see.
I'm trying to guess who he might go after. I'm going to try to guess on a 3C that would work well with the Pens or that can help the Pens in more than one way (C & LW or PK) or that is young and can help now and in the future. If I was a GM that is what I would try to do! |
