you lost me right away.
If a team has 2 goalies that are capable starters, surely that team's gm will receive calls for both. or maybe I am assuming too much? If Schneider was, or appeared, as good as Carey Price? wouldn't other teams be throwing all kinds of offers the Canucks way?
I heard rumours of an Oiler offer too. who knows for sure how that went down? kind of like rumours of the Leafs making offers for Luongo and then wanting to change the deal at the last minute. eat salary, whatever.
as it turned out, I will stand by the deal as being a win-win, and if you are saying it isn't a win for NJ, that is okay from my end. - hillbillydeluxe
As a Pens fan I would have loved it if we could have traded for Schneider, but we had playoff headcase Fleury at the time, which wouldn't be a chip that the Canucks would have been interested in since they were going with Luongo as their starter. So, Penguins, as an example, would have had to beat #9 overall in terms of picks and prospects, then in turn traded Fleury somewhere else (maybe at a loss)- just too many moving parts for teams that already have "starters" or at least a goalie making big $$ under a contract with term
You'd have to shop for a long time to find the right "deal" and Gillis wanted this move made fast in an attempt to clean up the goalie mess he created
A team like the Islanders or Flyers should have ponied up for Schneider, they were both clearly on the upswing (at least at the time) with clear holes in goal |

League Average goaltending is really easy to find, but exceptional goalies (which I at least at the time thought Schneider to be, and he may still be) are so rare that when you have one, It's hard to get fair value for them, so you are better off keeping them.
Like I said, in the end, in 2017 the Canucks are better off with Horvat, as they are at least 3-4 years from being serious contenders and Schneider would be 35/36 by then - the timing was probably just wrong for him and Vancouver, (and it's also wrong for him and NJ)
The Canucks have such a long history of average to terrible goalies, that it sucks to think that they had Luongo and Schneider overlap at pretty much the same time, - PensWin87
Yeah to bad they didn't overlap in games 3, 4 or 6 |

That little goalie controversy went on for some time... iirc, Luongo reaching the point of crying over his sucky contract on tv.
maybe I have my timeline screwed up, even if it all came down to one call at the draft, there was plenty of time for talk before the draft. |

No. Here's a quick look at the beginning of their pro careers.
Carey Price: drafted 5th overall
2007-08: To the surprise of some, Price actually broke camp with the Canadiens during this season. He very quickly turned those doubters into believers, and finished the season as the club's unquestioned number-one goalie. He played in 41 games, posting a 21-12-3 record behind a .920 save percentage and 2.56 GAA, and was named to the NHL's all-rookie team. His first playoff appearance in the NHL was a study in contrasts — at times he showed the elite talent and composure he has; at others, he started to show the impact playing so many games over the past two years has had on his fatigue level.
Cory Schneider: drafted 26th overall
2007-08: After a terrible opening to his first pro season with the Manitoba Moose, Schneider rebounded in the second half and finished with very strong numbers, including a 2.28 GAA and impressive .916 save percentage. - bloatedmosquito
Cory Schneiders NHL numbers don't start until 2010-2011 where he was 16-4-2 with a 2.23 GAA and .929 SV%, unless you want to count 2 and 8 game callup stints
He then went 1.96 GAA and .936 SV% in 11/12 and 2.11 GAA .927 SV% in 12/13 before he was traded - both superior to Price
Prices 12/13 season was 2.59 GAA and .905 SV%

The controversy was Gillis's endless attempt to trade Luongo, and when he failed to get a deal done, he knee jerk traded Schneider and attempted to mend fences with Luongo (which totally didn't work)
Fans had pretty much moved on that Schneider was the future and Luongo was the one who would get moved. Gillis was holding out for a Kings ransom and was saving face by not selling low
There was also talk of the Aqualinis not allowing any money to be kept off the Luongo deal or to authorize a buyout

Price at one time lost his job to Halak

Canuck goaltending historically has not been that bad compared to the forward and defensive groups.
Richard Brodeur
Sean Burke
Dan Cloutier
Bob Essensa
Alex Auld
Glen Hanlon
Corey Hirsch
Arturs Irbe
Roberto Luongo
Kirk McLean
Ryan Miller
Cory Schneider
I would say the canucks got the most they could from these 'average to terrible' goaltenders. Again, goaltending hasn't been the most glaring problem in canuck history.
Edit: mother of all kick saves...

That was Fosco. He was Lone Wolf while his wife was out of town. He got hammered and passed out on the couch while eating chocolate. He thought he cleaned it all until on of the throw pillows was turned over.

Yes, in the end when all the damage was done and all the bridges were burned, THATS when they finally did what probably had to be done in the first place
I shudder to think, when old Burkie was in charge of the Leafs, had the nucks been willing to eat 1 million of Luongo's contract who might be in Van right now...

That had nothing to do with Corey. He was just one cog in a very large wheel. |

So, going back to your original post, did we really sell low on Schneider?
is there any way to prove it either way?
I'm not sure who the mid level prospect was in the Oiler trade scenario, but if the Canucks were going to draft Horvat either way, I'm not really sure they sold low on Schneider. |

It'd be interesting to see if Nucks fans take to him after souring on Nylander. It's hard to ignore the fanbases' disgust about William and being soft. I think we need more time to see how this plays out. - walshyleafsfan
I might be the minority but i am not worried about nylander being soft. I think he will be just fine in the nhl. I think he will be a damn good player. |

Funny thing is I'm a Schneider fan. Hated to see him go but under the circumstances I think the canucks made a great deal. We now have a young impact forward on the canuck roster that's been missing since Kesler was drafted in 2003. |
