As a PA boy who relocated years ago I was always a fan of "Dutch" Daulton. That 1993 Phillies team is my favorite of all time and I've been around a long time. It was like watching a beer league softball team, and Dutch was there leader. Thanks for the memories. RIP "Dutch."

Fetisov, Larionov, and Murphy were big contributors that year (Murphy for the playoffs). So yes, they drafted most of them, but those were some big pieces they added.

Those guys were generally viewed as spent forces and DET picked them up pretty cheap and they plugged in and played great. I seem to recall Murphy being pretty well booed out of TOR.

Can you describe this a little more? What exactly did Jagr do to eat up defenders that Jake doesn't do?

His soul ate up defenders; something that a soulless ginger couldn't possibly ever do.

I don't know.

I thought Voracek got better after Jagr left. Voracek seems to do a solid job of shileding off defenders.

Did he die of cancer or was it something else? Nothing I've read is clear on that.

Nvm - just found an article that said his cancer did return.

Larionov was viewed as spent? He had just put up 24 points in 33 games in the 94/95 shortened season before being traded. Murphy may not have been liked, but he had just put up 61 points for Toronto the year before (and had 39 when traded). Fetisov, yeah, he looked just about done.

Yeah, they all had a bit of a resurgence, but Murphy and Larionov were still playing at good levels.

Just put a nice 6" long gash on my arm drilling a hole in a sheet metal box when it kicked on me. Yay my day!

I think the model we all want to hope for with Giroux is that his path follows Steve Yzerman's with DET. In the late 80s and into the 90s, he was a elite scorer but the Wings weren't good enough around him for them to go anywhere and were never serious contenders while he was at the top of his scoring game. Fortunately for DET fans, as Yzerman's numbers faded, the team was built up and he was able to be a different kind of contributor to three cup winners in his 30s.

There were a bunch of reasons for that, one was that scoring rate in the league declined. Also Yzerman chose to remake his game and become more of a complete player rather than just an offensive player. I think it was more of a choice than a necessity.

Same for Fedorov, maybe the most complete player I've ever seen. Both of them sacrificed their scoring numbers to make the team better.

Larionov played the best NHL hockey of his career pretty late in DET. He didn't play well in VAN and did have one really good year in SJ when the Sharks actually upset DET in the playoffs in 94. At the time, the additions of the two vet Russians to go with the fine three they had drafted was viewed as an experiment, not a bold move to put them over the top.

I am still waiting on the Habs/Flyers trade. For all the stuff he posted these past 2 days you would think he would have more Intel.

Are you going to need stitches?

'Cause you know who likes stitches?

Otherwise, it's not a gash, it's a scratch.

Can you imagine Hextall if it became known that a "Flyer player" was texting Ek about player personnel rumors like Ek claims to be getting from the Sabres?

I would imagine there would be full on goalie stick slashing to the back of said players legs......

Right player in the right place at the right time. He had some jump and was enthusiastic and could finish a little. He came in late in the year they finished dead last but late in that year they'd also brought in Coburn and Biron already and the team was starting to play decently. Upshall represented hope.
