Like I understand what he is saying but here is what he isn't taking into account:

It would be a sign and trade meaning:

Buffalo would be negotiating the contract terms.

If Tavares went to Free Agency just because he might want to come here doesn't mean he wouldn't get more attractive offers elsewhere.

Say you sign him now 8 years $80 million, if he goes to free agency he is getting 7 years and at least $80 million (at the very least that is an extra $1.5 million of cap space gone per year).

You give up the assets now for the sure thing at a more cost controlled rate. The extra $1.5-$2 million is going to be crucial down the road.

The Bills don't have a true star like the Sabres do in Jack. I don't pay enough attention to the NFL lately, but I would say they don't have guys at the ROR, Okposo, Kane, Risto level either.

On the other hand, the NFL is far more a team sport, just a few stars don't get it done when 22 (or 30) different guys are getting significant playing time.

Just saying it could be done

And my main point is that Tavares is gonna pick his next team either way
So if it's gonna be us...
then don't give up assets for him

If Tavares gets to free agency -which i highly doubt, I don't see him signing in Buffalo. Unfortunately Toronto would be his likely destination. Why? He's from there, they have the best coach in the hockey world and they have an amazing assortment of young talent. They are further ahead of the Sabres on the rebuild and unfortunately I think they will stay ahead of us. Thus, the Leafs can probably give him something the Islanders and (maybe) Sabres can't - a yearly guarantee of playoff hockey and a legitimate chance at the Cup (in a couple of years).

It pains me to write the above paragraph but that's the way i see it. Lastly, i still say that the Islanders sign him. They are absolutely f*cked if they don't.

O'Reilly had to factor in who would pay him,
an whether or not it would be worth the gamble to pass up the 7.5 we were offering to maybe/maybe not get that from somewhere else
