Like I understand what he is saying but here is what he isn't taking into account:

It would be a sign and trade meaning:

Buffalo would be negotiating the contract terms.

If Tavares went to Free Agency just because he might want to come here doesn't mean he wouldn't get more attractive offers elsewhere.

Say you sign him now 8 years $80 million, if he goes to free agency he is getting 7 years and at least $80 million (at the very least that is an extra $1.5 million of cap space gone per year).

You give up the assets now for the sure thing at a more cost controlled rate. The extra $1.5-$2 million is going to be crucial down the road.

But if u wanted to argue it's not, I'd say that's a very fair stance to take

The assets (picks, prospects etc) would take up that $1.5 million very quickly.

Not to mention any roster player coming back in that potential ROR trade would eat up more cap.

$2 million would cover 2 entry level players (think Bailey or Baptiste) type players. I bet Chicago would have loved to have an additional $2 million in cap space to add to their team.

Also if JT wants to play in Buffalo or anywhere else matters when it comes to Free Agency. A player could want to play in a few different places and pick which ever team gives him the best deal (driving up the price) but if a place he wants to play in trades for him then he can get the deal worked out sooner than later.

Trading for him now keeps the price down (even $1.5 million can make a lot of difference) keeps other teams from offering more money, gets you the knowledge that his cap hit will be with your team for X number of years. Waiting until Free Agency leaves way too many options open.

I agree. 5 of the 6 wingers would need to be on ELCs. And Bogo needs to go. I thought I read a month ago, Botts had a trade in place to move Bogo but backed out. This was a mistake........
