Was listening to the Jeff Patterson earlier . His take on why Doan Jagr and Iginla have not been signed is because teams are gearing up for 4 fast scoring lines. The key word is Fast. He says that is the reason teams are not biting.
I don't think the Canucks need another old slow guy. - VANTEL
Agree but another additional 50 points sure wouldn't hurt this club. You could shelter Jagr's lack of speed by PP time and 3-4 line duties. Plus he would put asses in the seats. Sure might be looked at as a gimmick but just maybe he could provide some 'actual' leadership here. I wouldn't be opposed to the signing as it would be cheap and would basically guarantee us 40-50 points. Considering where this club is going to be for most of the season in the standings it would not hurt us one bit.
I get the speed aspect of it though and understand why teams won't risk it…just would be kinda cool to see him on the PP here. |

I still think the Canucks should entertain trading Tanev for RNH, it saves them (Oilers) some cap space and makes our team a bit more entertaining and competitive. Ryan played last year as a 23 year old I believe, the guy is still so young and if he's put in an offensive role he can produce. - LeftCoaster

Why? If you bring RNH in, you'd have to trade Sutter immediately because you'd have too many centers. Not to mention we have little to no depth in D with the loss of Tryamkin to consider that move. Wait a year, the Sedins will retire and then if OJ plays and does as well as hoped/expecteed, then you can explore that trade and Edmonton might even throw in more in the deal too if they feel they're close to being able to win the Cup. Not to mention Sutter probably would be open to being traded to a contender by TDL if the season goes as expected. - DariusKnight

im talking specifically D-men. NSH seem to always use their first pick, or one of their first few picks to always draft D-men. - Codes1087
I don't believe that's true. Most of their D aren't from the first round |

bpa when they drafted Jones. (I think they wanted a fwd but couldn't pass up on Jones)
d prospects don't seem to be as sexy a pick as offensive forwards. |

In 20 drafts they have taken a D in the first round 7 times:
2001 - Hamhuis
2003 - Suter
2005 - Parent
2007 - Blum
2009 - Elis
2013 - Jones
2016 - Fabbro
Also for an expansion franchise, I am surprised they didnt have a 1st round pick 4 times in those 20 years |

Thanks for this, I only went back a couple of years. There is a reason they have been so good defensively for so many years. When you have this amount of calibre D, you can also make trades for players like Subban and Johanson. And essentially, in 20 years, 7 first round picks out of 16 available spent on D men shows why they are this good. A commitment to drafting defensemen never hurts IMO. |

Yes, but their D is good because of strong drafting, not because they have focused their top picks on D |

I was just checking through and they have drafted very well, particularly on defense, which as allowed them to make deals.
Of the non-first round picks, a few notables:
Erat - 7th round pick (turned into Forsberg)
Weber - 2nd rounder
Klein - 2nd rounder
Rinne - 8th rounder
Franson - 3rd rounder
Hornqvist - 7th rounder
Josi - 2nd rounder
Ekholm - 4th rounder
Their 2009 draft produced 1451 games played (and counting), while their 2003 draft has produced 2512 games played (again, so far) of strictly defenseman |

they go hand in hand though. You have a better chance of drafting quality defensemen if you do so more frequently with early round picks than if you do it less frequently with late round picks. |

there is no denying that NSH's scouts deserve credit. That is an insane stat...
you can probably through Arvidsson in there as well as a 4th round pick |

IMO it's too early to comment on Bennings drafting, he's had a few misses but hopefully he can produce one or hopefully two quality kids out of his drafts. |

Definitely can add Arvidsson now too, I think a few others will become NHL regulars as well.
By comparison, since 2007 Canuck drafted players have played 1553 NHL games and the most games played by a Canuck draft year since 1980 was the 1999 draft where only Henrik and Daniel have played 2473 games |

I haven't criticized Benning's drafting, I am simply praising NSH's and MIN drafting of Defensemen. I will say this though, if you look at teams that have drafted strong defensemen, you will realize that they commit more than late round picks to drafting D-men. Canucks under Benning, apart from Juolevi, have not really shown that yet. Brisebois was a 3rd, Tryamkin was a 3rd, Candella was a 5th, Neil was a 5th, Forsling 5th. Rathbone a 4th. I am not taking a shot at Benning for how he drafts, he has obviously found good players throughout the entire 7 rounds of the draft in his time in Buffalo, Boston, and Van. |

hard to draft lots of D when you don't have any picks. they need a few years with multiple 2nd and 3rd round picks. |

I wasn't implying you were....just saying we don't know yet if his way will be successful or not. I can tell you this though, teams that haven't committed to drafting dmen in the first round have won a lot more Cups than Nashville has |

100%, but that is on Benning as well. You obviously have a great chance of finding a gem like Gaudette when you increase your odds with more draft picks. |

Oh I agree, while it is too early to criticize his drafting, what we can criticize is what Donny just mentioned, and that is, its hard to draft quality D-men when you are constantly missing your middle rounds picks instead of acquiring them. |

If Benning wouldn't have pissed away 2nd round picks in his second and third years he would perhaps be better off than he is now, but it's water under the bridge. He did it right this year. Next year he won't be so fortunate to have that second round pick for free, he's gonna have to generate one. |

Honestly, 1st round pick inside the top 10 to me, is BPA 90% of the time (obviously situational). If Benning spent the 2018 draft, acquiring some 2nd, 3rd, 4th round picks, and spent them all on D-men, I would be ecstatic. |

NYI drafted 7 D in 2012. 90 NHL games combined so far. |
