Carol Schram: Brendan Batchelor & Corey Hirsch named as Vancouver Canucks new radio team Sportsnet 650 announced on Monday that Brendan Batchelor and Corey Hirsch will take over the Vancouver Canucks play-by-play broadcasts starting this fall. Plus, a look at soon-to-be free agents Will Butcher and Alex Kerfoot.

Thank you Carol. Always a good read and detailed, no hype, just rational and informative. You are greatly appreciated by all of us, even the ones who don't interact very often.

Corey Hirsch seems like an alright dude, but I'm not really a fan of him as an analyst/commentator, they should just make the Johns do the play by play on the radio as well.

Awfully humbling 650 is launching on my B'Day & honouring me so.

1st I'd like to thank my wife & family without whom i never could have done it without them. I would also like to thank Toastmasters without whom i could never rise to the heights HB has afforded. Lastly I wish to thank my grade 1 teacher Mrs Marschenko who taught me my abc's & 1,2,3's

I miss Jim Robson and Tom Larscheid on the radio, they were the best, period. I'll never forget Robson's call of Bure's OT goal in Game 7 of the 1st round or him saying, "He'll play, you'll know he'll play, he'll play with a broken leg if he has to." about Trevor Linden at the end of Game 6 of the Finals. The only thing that stands out from the rest of the Play By Play guys was Shorthouse in the Western Finals shouting, "Bieksa get the puck, he shoots, he scores, KEVIN BIEKSA!" but even then he was barely excited on the radio.

A lot of the newer play by play guys and announcers are pretty plain and far too calm. There's very few of the Harry Carey/Mike Lang (Pittsburg PBP guy) type announcers now. Now all the people on the radio and TV can't even show much personality or even appear to be homerish, which to me, if you're hired to be a team's radio personalities, is kind of pointless.

Kerfoot would instantly be one of the best forward prospects in Utica next year if we signed him. As far as forwards, he probably places behind Virtanen, McEwen, Goldobin, Molino in Utica. With a forward prospect pool so shallow in the AHL, Kerfoot would not be a bad FREE player to sign IMO. I would have him ranked ahead of Cassels, Stewart, Laplante, Carcone. If you can possibly get a free Connor Sheary, you bite the bullet on the player taking up 1 of your 50 contract spots.

IMO we don't need to spend a contract on a probable career AHLer.
Cassels prolly on his last contract.
Laplante was an ECHLer mostly.
Carcone has time still.

Hello all.

As promised we have a new Mod for the Van threads. I will still be on here from time to time but I am very happy that Whitelie has offered to help out. My hope is that he is not needed but nonetheless he is here should anything arise that will disrupt the thread.

Thanks everyone.

why would you sign any player under 23 with the sole intention of being an AHL regular? You sign free agents with the intention/hope of them becoming more than an AHL player. IE, Stecher, Chatfield, MacEwen, Molino. You hope they can turn into a Connor Sheary, Mark Giordano, Andrej Sustr, and add any type of impact at the pro level. Our Utica depth is absolute garbage, we are keeping Darren Archibald around FFS.

Kerfoot would have to get 2 year deal based on his age, Canucks currently have 45 contracts for this season and 22 for next (46 & 23 with Bo).

I argued to not waste contracts on AHL fodder earlier, but I think his time in college is more valuable than a CHL overager. I dont know his playing style, but could be a decent call up option or at least bring some offensive talent for prospects to play with in Utica
