I've owned an Audi and a VW. They both caught on fire. They are extremely poorly made. You better hope you are buying new with a warranty. BMW is twice the car if you want German in the same price range

I've owned a Golf VR6, Audi A4, Golf GTI, Jetta TDI since I started driving 16 years ago. I got to 300,000 Km with very few problems on the first two. 70,000 Km on the jetta TDI and GTI. Oil change are the only thing that have been done.

Beamers are definitely nice. They are more expensive.

Friend in Toronto was super high on them. Top of the line 3 series sedan, traded it off after 2 years for a X5. Now has two mitsubishi's. Says they aren't half the car but he hasn't had to go back to the dealership. I guess he had crazy problems with both of his beamers. Says he would never buy one again. He's looking at the new Jag's now.

My old man, (not as old as you) has a 1976 GMC street Van. Body isn't the greatest but runs like a dream. Has 700,000 plus Km's on it. Such a creeper van

I had my A4, even had a bunch of engine mods done to it. from 52,000 km to 310,000 and zero problems till my heater core blew. Never caught on fire though.
