Doesn't sound like it. - manvanfan
Teams cannot covet kids who are still property of other teams. What Butcher does in his free time is up to him, but legally, him or his agent cannot take calls from other teams/gm's. |

I just quoted two sources they says then can. If he has set up visits, he would have to talk to teams to know if they are interested. |

who are your sources, you just posted two quotes with no names...
Remember when Benning said he would look into Stamkos before he hit free agency? That didn't end well for him and his wallet.
And I think you are mistaken. Butcher's agent has gone on record today with Rick Dhaliwal saying "We are going to explore all options, and if the Canucks call TOMORROW, we will certainly be listening"
Rick Dhaliwal @DhaliwalSports
Midnight tonight teams can start calling the agents for NCAA free agents F Alex Kerfoot and D Will Butcher.
Rick Dhaliwal @DhaliwalSports
Butcher's agent Brian Bartlett will be busy tomorrow, he tells me again that he wouldn't rule out the #Canucks if they call.

Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News: The Detroit Red Wings are one of the teams that are interested in signing unrestricted free agent defenseman Will Butcher.
Butcher won the Hobey Baker Award last season after recording seven goals and 30 assists in 43 games.
There had been some talk that Butcher wanted to go pro last year after his junior year but the Colorado Avalanche felt he wasn’t ready.
Butcher can start talking to teams today.
Other teams that have been linked to Butcher include the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild, Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs and New Jersey Devils.

Everything you need to know about Will Butcher, the NHL’s next top college free agent
The Hobey Baker winner’s draft rights with the Avalanche expire Tuesday. Here’s why he’s hitting free agency, and what happens next.

Slightly impossible to set up visits if you can't talk to teams. |

30 teams will essentially be "linked" to Butcher. The same way the Canucks are "linked" to Kerfoot. It doesn't mean poop. It just means that those specific teams are going to see what it takes to sign the kid. You can't phone a kid or his agent, when he is property of another team, it goes against the CBA.

Said it yourself. To sign the kid. Says he can't sign till tomorrow does not say he can't talk to teams as of today. |

Brian Bartlett @BBarts
NHL teams hold NCAA players' rights "through and including" Aug. 15 so midnight tonight is the first time other teams can express interest.
And to add. Take a look at all the tweets and stories of teams showing interest in these soon to be free agent kids. Note that the statements are non official and come free sources saying "team A is to have reported interest in signing player A when he hits free agency". There is reason not a single GM has gone on record to say they have interest in the kid, or are going to pursue them. All you will hear is statements or quotes from the GM who holds the kids rights saying they are trying to sign him. |

Benning can't afford to lose another 50k. He literally got fined for saying he would go after Stamkos and Subban if they make it to free agency. This is no different. Free agents are free agents. Deadlines are deadlines. CBA is concrete and doesn't bend lol |

They also said Benning got fined for something every GM does. We all know that there are back channel discussions to gauge interest. Official stuff cant happen, like you cant talk money/term during the UFA window, but it does. These college kids wont get any surprise phone calls tomorrow |

that's exactly it. Teams can have "reported" interest all they want, its just every other GM doesn't go directly to the media and say it lol. Butcher's agent will have his phoning ringing all night as soon as the clock hits midnight tonight, it would be stupid not to phone and make a pitch. But my point to manfan was, you can't call a RFA if he is not yet a UFA, its tampering and it completely goes against the CBA. |

Well previous year they traded Kessel to get Seguin.
That season they traded for Gregory Campbell and Nathan Horton, Chris Kelly, Tomas Kaberle, Rich Peverely.
Boston Bruins acquire Adam McQuaid
Columbus Blue Jackets acquire 2007 5th round pick (#129-Jamie Benn)
I don't know who Columbus traded that pick for but I bet you they wish they didn't!
Going to have drafted players on every team. Half of the team will probably be drafted. The other half will be through trades or free agency. - manvanfan
That's fair. I agree Horton (until he got KTFO) and Kelly were both instrumental. Seguin wasn't (except for two games in the con. finals). Mcquaid I'd agree was an ok piece as well. The rest weren't as much influence in their run IMO. Thomas, Bergeron, Chara, Siedenberg, Marchand and Lucic were the backbone of that run.

Thomas was a free agent, Chara they got in a trade much earlierer. Seidenberg they traded for in 09. |

"If Jim Benning calls on the 15th, we would be very interested to see what he has to say.” Bartlett told Rick Dhaliwal of Vancouver’s News 1130. “We are looking for opportunity and there is certainly opportunity in Vancouver, we will see how they stack up."
Dude better get his story straight soon. Or he can talk to teams today but can't sign till tomorrow.

A few former Canucks and a few players I recall being UFA targets for some posters in years past - WhiteLie
First one on the list is just dead wrong. Perry has been regressing the past few years and has a brutal term and number. Bieksa is in the last year of his deal. Abdelkader? how about jimm howard at 5.3 mil? how the hell is making that kind of money? How is Russel worse than Lucic? the list goes on. But it was a good read, so thanks for the share. |

For sure. GM's have three options when building teams. each team is made up of those. if were talking many years in advance, then yes some trades affected the cup run. that core had been together for years. The trades that were made going into that year and at the TDL were of minor affect with the exception of the three I mentioned, and really Kelly and Horton are the only ones that really made much of a difference. I wasn't implying that their core wasn't made opf some players they traded for, every core is. I was implying they didn't make much in the way of moves going into/during their winning season |

Some are definitely debatable. I would take Howard for 2 more years, than Abdelkader for 6 more years at his age and cap hit.
I also think they also took the lazy way out using Bolland, Horton, Clarkson contracts. Sure they take up summer cap space but they are essentially irrelevant 10 months out of the year |
