Four years from making the playoffs is my prediction. If they manage to find at least two kids per draft over that time. - LeftCoaster
I will never let you hear the end of it, when they make the playoffs before 2021. |

Can't answer that, I don't know where they'll actual pick and who's left on the floor. As I said, if they pick #1 and Dahlin is the top rated kid, you take him. If they're picking #3 and those two are gone, you take the next best kid....Veleno perhaps. - LeftCoaster
Let's just say for arguements sake it's Veleno and Dahlin as top two rated. No consensus #1. Usually the case it's a pair/trio without a Mcdavid up for grabs.

It doesn't make next draft less desperate for a center because Pettersson and Gaudette aren't playing in the NHL next year so you have no idea if they'll be good or not. You still need a top center, a high-end skilled center to compete in the future. You also need a number one dman but I guess it depends on who's ranked higher and who you figure is the best player available.
If a defenceman is ranked number one and you're picking number one, you take him, if it's a center, you take him. Either way, Pettersson and Gaudette have no bearing on next year's draft because they're still an unknown. - LeftCoaster
Its ALWAYS stud D & Elite C in the 1st round. Wingers r for later rounds.
BPA though i'm not a fan of that term. Patience with D is obvious unless its a Hedman at the top of the draft but thats very rare. Never can have enough top C's & both top 2 D & top 1-2 C's are great assets to keep or trade in big deals. A C can play wing & give depth whilst wingers r either 25 goal scorers & better or just here til replaced by the next cost control player. |

Ok i circle back to BPA or top rated kid...
Rated by who? Only list that matters is JB's.
Patrick to the Flyers was an automatic as was Makar to the Av's.
Nearly every other pick is arguable when ppl choose their own list. |

Already mentioned Svetchnikov as there. Let's just keep him as the other option on the spokes of choice. Just wanted the answer for what's better for Canucks. Concentrating on the top D or C choice of equally ranked top players. |

Given the time line on prospects thats probably about right.
Stranger things have happened & we could be a PO team in 2yrs at best. |

Take the center every time. A true number 1 defenseman is very hard to come by and #2, #3 types will be more than sufficient to be a cup winner.
Veleno Tkachuk at centre and lots of good defenseman available later in draft. McIsaac, Samuelsson as 2 quick examples of solid defensemen available this draft. Many more available.
Also, depends how you define a true #1, if you look at points only then players like Barrie and Shattenkirk are #1's, not imo though as they are huge liabilities on the defensive side of things. They need to be able to play in all situations.
Hedman is a perfect example of one of the best young #1 defensemen in the league, if not the best.

Next draft we go for Dahlin for need if he is there even at 1OA.
Svechnikov is a great intrigue but not a fan of picking a winger high in the 1st generally speaking. In the case Dahlin is gone & we can pick him I'd seriously think on a big trade & move down a few spots. If that got us say a top 5 plus a top prospect or 2-1sts & maybe more that would be my aim. The question is who we trade with & what we target or we could simply take Svechnikov while trading assets as in Sven or more for more picks/prospects. Winger logjam is nice but quality or quantity will be nicer in the long run. |

In this scenario just say both equally top rated player who would be a star 1C or 1D in the NHL. Given what the Canucks have who do you choose? |

Agree if an elite C is in the draft but idk if a Draisaitl is there next draft.
I ignore a McDavid or Matthews of course since Veleno appears to be the early favourite. Need to see him more this season to better gauge him. Thachuk is a curiosity bit on all accounts his skating holds him back but if he is a BO type hard worker that could be ignored somewhat. So much depends on where we pick & who is there but we will be looking good to add another serious piece. |
