Carol Schram: Trevor Linden says Bo Horvat talks progressing, Vanek, Hockey at the PNE During his annual Presidents' Week appearance on TSN1040, Trevor Linden expressed confidence that a contract with Bo Horvat would soon be completed and suggested that the team could still sign more free agents. Meanwhile, hockey fans can enjoy an expansive Hockey Hall of Fame exhibit at the PNE this year.

Thank you Carol.

One would now assume that if the Canucks had the 1OA last draft, they probably would have taken Makar. It surprises me to hear that Benning would have passed on Nico and Nolan.

Linden has said on the Radio that if he had the 1OA and won the lottery, he wouldn't have chosen Nolan or Nico. This was strictly a statement over who he would choose at 1oa.

"but we're working hard at things to avoid not having him at training camp," Linden said.

Yeah, things are going so well with the Horvat negotiations that they're working hard to avoid starting the season without him!...

Think about that for a second...

Negotiations (that are usually completed in June) are apparently going so well (we've offered everything from 2 to 8 years and everything in-between and yet he's still managed to refused all of them) that we now have to work hard to get him signed before its too late and the season starts (or, in other words, several months late).

Yeah, so positive these negotiations! We're totally going to re-sign him for a good price!... /s

It'll get done, sooner or later. Camp is vitally important though. I think Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau missed camp last year for the Flames and they had poor starts to the year. We don't want that with Horvat, they need him on the ice and the fans would be irate!

You are making a mountain out of a mole hill. A player can't participate in training camp unless he is signed. Linden is essentially just saying that they are working at having him come to camp, AKA, GETTING HIM SIGNED. Stop with the hysteria FFS

Where in the CBA does it say this? They still hold his RFA rights, so he's still allowed to participate but he'd be an idiot to do so.

There's some truth to his rant anyway, the fact that the Canucks have been open to both a bridge and a long term contract and they still haven't gotten a deal done is a bit concerning. Clearly Horvat's camp are taking advantage of the fact that he's basically the face of a franchise who's management team is on the hot seat.

I wonder if both sides are maybe waiting for Alex Wennberg's deal to get done, or if Wennberg/CBJ is looking to do the same by waiting for Horvat Although I assume player agents do talk to each other quite a bit anyway.

He can go to camp but he'd have to find his own insurance I believe.

Horvat is a notorious slow starter going all the way back to his OHL days anyway.

I don't recall the last time a RFA, who was unsigned, participated in development/preseason training camps. Whether it was due to the CBA, or holding out, it really doesn't matter. Linden is essentially saying, we want to get him signed before the pre-season to avoid not having Bo there.

I am not 100% sure how it works within the CBA. I always thought you couldn't participate, hence why players are signed to PTO and active contracts are the ones who participate.

Of course that what he's saying, but that's not the point. The point is that it's a concern that Linden has flat out said that they've offered both a bridge and long term contract so it sounding like Horvat's camp wants the $$$. They have a lot of leverage, even with him as RFA since this city will rip Linden/Benning a new one if he isn't playing on opening night. The pressure is all on management's side here. Of course it'll suck for Horvat to have to miss out on exhibition games and potentially some regular season games since that means he'll be behind everyone else when it comes to being in real game shape but that's a small price to pay if he can get more money.

I am not sure they are doing what is out of the ordinary when it comes to these types of negotiations. Is Benning and Linden not doing their due diligence in trying to see where Horvat and his Agent are at when it comes to difference length (year) deals?
