I am not sure they are doing what is out of the ordinary when it comes to these types of negotiations. Is Benning and Linden not doing their due diligence in trying to see where Horvat and his Agent are at when it comes to difference length (year) deals?

Fair enough. But, the concern is still legit. Of course he's eventually going to sign, but it seems like the hope to get him locked up at a nice cap hit for 6-8 years isn't likely to happen.

the only difference between Horvat and Wennberg negotiations right now, is that Linden and Benning (again) publically discuss everything Canucks, where as other GM's keep negotiations quiet and private until they are completed.

Why Linden feels he needs to do a 2 hour radio show, tell everyone that if he had 1st overall pick last draft, he would have not picked the top two draft picks (completely irrelevant) and then go on to go into detail about what has been talked about between Horvat's agent and Management in terms of negotiations. Most GM's just don't do that.

Thanks Carol. Seems Nucks are holding back on contract signings for drafted players to keep options open. Palmu probably wanted an ELC now to play for Comets and have a chance for a call up.

Like other prospects Canucks are measuring who they think is ready for NHL. If not ready, development in other leagues or NCAA, is fine with them rather then stocking up Comets. Seems they believe they have enough contracts that could be sent to Comets and want to add proven vets now with the space they have for this season.

Of course that what he's saying, but that's not the point. The point is that it's a concern that Linden has flat out said that they've offered both a bridge and long term contract so it sounding like Horvat's camp wants the $$$. They have a lot of leverage, even with him as RFA since this city will rip Linden/Benning a new one if he isn't playing on opening night. The pressure is all on management's side here. Of course it'll suck for Horvat to have to miss out on exhibition games and potentially some regular season games since that means he'll be behind everyone else when it comes to being in real game shape but that's a small price to pay if he can get more money.

1) Eriksson will bounce back and will be traded to Arizona/Vegas in the future who will happily take him because they'll take on all 50+ bad contracts in the NHL when the players are old too old and start to suck.

2) Virtanen just needs more time, he's gonna surprise everyone! He's one of those players who plays better against NHL'ers instead of AHL'ers. A fascinating talent. He's a good misunderstood kid who just like girls, I had beer with him once.

3) All of our decent/good prospects will pan out, pencil...no... permanent marker them all in your 2020 lineup!

Nah, if Wennberg holds out, I doubt CBJ media/fans are going to put Keko on the owner's hot seat as GM, the team just had a great season(by their standards). Wennberg isn't the face of that franchise, even though he's a core piece for them and their offense would definitely suffer without him.

Huge difference right there. Horvat's camp are well aware of that fact, they'd be idiots if they don't realize that they have an advantage in this market/situation.

Linden and Benning have no filter. What is behind closed office doors is generally open to the public via radio talkshow a mere 2 days later. To a degree, I like the openness, but for the most part, I just don't get why they can't keep things quiet and professional when needed. People don't really need to know what they offered Horvat, no one cares, we only care he is signed, so just get it done!

Name the last GM that went public with any sort of specifics, when currently negotiating with one of their players. It just doesn't happen. "we are still working on that and are optimistic we will have something done before camp" is what you generally hear.

Yeah, fair enough.

This has nothing to do with the post you quoted though. The concerns are still legit.

Nah, this is the opposite. Live look at the negotiating table:
