So I guess Don Sweeney took a page outta Lindens book, and publically announced how much they're offering Pastrnak. Some kinda of new strategy?
The difference is I don't get the feeling that Bo wants to leave, Pastrnak I do. |

I think that Oilers Chiarelli, giving out 2 huge contracts may have distorted the salary structure moving forward. It will be hard to convince these players coming off ELC's, that have had a decent season and a half that they shouldn't get paid.
Gone are the days of proving to be a consistent scorer before getting paid. |

McDavid is kind of on a planet of his own IMO when it comes to his new salary, he won the Art Ross, the Hart and the Lindsay at the age of 19.
Draisaitl's salary is in line with guys who finish at the top of the scoring every year. I think because the Oilers fans suffered so long they just said (frank) it and paid the guys. |

Chiarelli has been known to do this, but at the same time, look at what Poile has done in NSH. He has signed a few key players to extremely cap friendly deals. Boston and Vancouver were pretty quick to hand out 6 million to both Backes and LE, it surprises me if either Pastrnak and Horvat come in below them strictly based of those contracts. |

I would have handed out McDavid the same money in a heartbeat. Kid is going to be at the top of the leaderboards for many many many years. |

I agree McDavid was going to get paid big money, did they need to do it this off-season though?
Draisaitl should be a very good player but after a season and a half getting paid what he is now getting, makes you wonder what players like Pastrnak will get.(7 million?)
If I am Bo I would expect 6-6.5, which would make him 3/4 of the player Draisaitl is. Pretty realistic numbers moving forward. IMO |

Just read back a bit, N4U if we go back to 2013 when Horvat was drafted why not go back to 2012 when Hutton was drafted, he could be considered a core player.....couldn't he?
2012 - Hutton
2013 - Horvat
2014 - Demko, Virtanen?
2015 - Boeser, Gaudette?
2016 - Juolevi
2017 - Pettersson (possibly a few others)
That's six years of drafting right there, the last four are largely unknown. It could take two more years, it could take five, we wont know until we know. If the latter is the case then you're right, they'll have wasted some good years of Horvats career. We'll see how it turns out.

Yes I wouldn't be surprised to see them asking for 6 plus. That's in part because the Canucks have no leverage here imo, he's all they got.....thanks to Gillis. |

Poile may have gotten some players at a bargain, but, he just signed Johansen to a hefty contract and has Subban at 9+ per.
Both players have been solid contributors in the league for a few seasons now and have "earned" lucrative contracts.
I was just trying to point out that we, as fans, should expect to see salaries rise for the top players & expect players like Pastrnak and Bo for that matter to get paid more than what we talk about here. |

It's really hard to determine who's a core player and who's not until they prove it. Only in time will we be able to look back and say that's where they got it right and it started right there. Kinda like I've done with Chicago and Los Angeles.
If you look back on both of their drafting histories, they took six and seven years to establish a core group of guys. LA did it through drafting low and trading some of those accumulated picks for Carter and Richards to supplement Kopitar, Doughty, Brown, Quick, Martinez, King, Voynov, Nolan, Clifford & Toffoli.
Chicago did it through pure drafting to get Seabrook, Keith, Toews, Byfuglien, Crawford, Kane, Bolland & Hjalmarsson. They did trade for Sharp and sign Hossa as a UFA though. |

Agreed. Hard to call anyone a core player at this point. Horvat looks the most likely, after that.... |

In a hard cap world you can't win IMO without that absolute topend talent, the only way to get it this day and age is through the draft, some call it tanking, some call it planning. Hopefully Pettersson is the start of that planning!

Bennington has done it right the last couple seasons, remain competitive until February and when you see your chances of making playoffs fading, dump players or have them get injuries taken care of.
Build through the draft |
