Hey Tanner, great write up. Though as a resident of Phoenix for all 36 years I've been alive, high school basketball is no where near number 1 here (maybe 2 but I digress). We are such a transient town that whichever franchise is winning at the time, that's the sport. It was the Suns in the 90's, Dbacks in the early 2000's and its' been the Cardinals since 2008. I mean come on, we are the 5th largest city in the US....
Doan is a legend here. He, along with Fitz and Luis Gonzalez, are the most beloved athletes in the valley. He is giving of his time to a fault, always willing to talk to kids and fans alike for hours after games or in public. He stayed with the franchise when no one else would have though all of the ownership crap, BK, arena and general dysfunction that has plagued the Coyotes for years.
There were a ton of trolls on this site yesterday bashing him, and I didn't want to respond. I'll just say this. I've met the man twice, and he went out of his way to not only engage me but both of my kids in a genuine conversation when he could have honestly said hey I have things to do or just a sign an autograph and bail. I have a picture of him and my 12 year old daughter that hangs in her room and is her most prized possession. I think that says a lot about the character of the man, not with standing all of the thousands and thousands of folks he has been just as nice to. Congrats on the great career Doan, and I can't wait to attend the jersey retiring ceremony. - gmiel1980
Well said. It was disappointing seeing all the trolls come out to bash Doan at the beginning of the thread. He was never an elite talent, but acknowledged that in his own retirement speech. In many ways he was a poor man's Iginla, and I'm still hard pressed to think of many teams that wouldn't have loved to have a player like that on their second line while he was in his prime. He is a legend in the valley; it's not his fault that he was the best player the Yotes had most of the last decade.

David Runblad was successful whenever he got ice time and I thought he had potential to be a top four defenseman. The last time we seriously discussed him was two years ago. And at the time, it wasn't even close to a hot take or anything - tons of people were surprised he didn't stick in the NHL given his success when he played.
If I said directly, with no qualifications, that I think that he is a top four NHL defenseman today, right now, then sure, make fun of that, because that would be stupid.
As far as things I've said that turned out to be wrong, that doesn't even crack the top one million anyways. - James_Tanner
Easily, hands down, in a class by himself as the absolute worst D man ever to lace em up for the Chicago Blackhawks in the past 60+ years I've been alive. You have to be doing this on purpose to elicit responses. Last time I'll bite. |

Tanner also thinks Runblad is a top 4 dman
And yet Trump is the joke? - PatShart
Runblad, one of Stan's worst moves. Runblad was the benefactor of the guys, like Keith, he skated with each night. |

If you want to write off the serious criticism of this national tragedy as being nothing more than the hip thing to do, then all I can do is laugh at the way you guys eat up the brainwashing propaganda. - James_Tanner

Buddy, I feel sorry for your parents. To think they raised someone who actually writes "maga" on a public forum like a brainwashed puppy probably brings them so much shame and embarrassment. It should, anyways.
My suggestion to you is that you attempt to get that pesky GED and then get yourself into college. |
