Dahlstrom the dman at Rockford last season formerly was a forward. He skates smooth, he skates well and is all over the ice; he is involved. He looks to have good reads. He puts accurate shots on net. He is a big size player but each time I saw him, he plays soft. Non combative would be a better description. Imagine the players get their sticks and temper up after a skirmish in front of our net. I do not imagine Dahlstrom is lo pushing anyone. So he is an enigma to my way if reasoning. I am curious if Samuelson gets into his head and coaxes him into reaching the next level in development. Because if he is a pacifist big man, well then we have offensive small guys in Snuggerud and Gustafsson

Noralll is called positionally sound. He can play either side. I haven't watched him closely to get an early prognosis on a player whom originally was compared to Hjalmarsson's style. More:I too am curious how Press performs in the rookie tournament. And.....we have a swedish RW prospect whose name is the same or similar to Dahlstrom.

Another interesting development: the rookie Czech sign is a RW likely close to NHL ready. But is he ultimately a good third line guy?

I agree with you. If he can play as strong as last year, he has a chance. Speed and he has added few pounds. Last year he was sent back, because he could not be sent to Rockford at any time during the year. Different setting this year

Scott Powers mentioned that Shilanov won 9/11 face offs.

Which is interesting and only means this: let us see if he can win the same way against NHL competition.

Face off acumen is a valuable attribute for Blackhawk prospects. But in Shulanov case, let us see him be more dedicated to an improved all around game!

Coyotes extend Duclair at 1.2 million for 1 year.

He is someone I thought might be good for the Hawks speed/youth/cost movement. Hawks could have offer-sheeted him 1.5 and only parted with a 3rd rounder.

I know he is not big, and coming off a terrible year....but he has speed....some skill....and is just 22 years old. Oh, and he has played LW.

Oh well, just thought it was a low-risk kinda signing that would have been in the line of the Hawk moves this summer. And, another LW option for lines 2 or 3.

Thinking Stan must have some things already in the works for early October when the Hossa money frees up. Hope so anyway....

- hawk35

If the Hawks would have offer sheeted him at $1.5m, the Yotes would have matched - they never wouldn't have let him get away for $300k. They would have matched up to the next compensation range at the very least, which would be a 2nd the Hawks don't have. If the Hawks had wanted him, they'd have had to trade for him and they would want to wait to sell low on him, give him a chance to bounce back.

Offer sheets rarely happen for many reasons and one of them is because the value of the player is low enough that the original team would easily match any not-outrageous offer, like your proposal.

True. Though, now that he is signed, maybe Hawks could look at acquiring him via trade....IF Coyotes are not high on him. But, maybe after last year, Hawk management doesn't think much of him either. LW/ young/ speed....checks a few boxes. I would be checking in with Coyotes just to see if any deal could be made. 20 goals couple years ago on a bad team.....potential there, was last year the exception or the reality....????

Not sure about Carl Dahlstrom, but I'm fairly certain Robin Press was a converted forward to defenseman. I think there's another prospect who is like that (F to D or D to F) but can't remember who.

The Yotes are decently high on him, though the leash is probably shorter than normal. But they just signed him to a normal 'show-me' bridge deal (and one of the guys on Trade insider said they'd wanted a 2-3 years deal). Lots of players have rough sophomore years, especially ones on poop teams, and it would be silly of them to sell on him low. It's a nice idea, but most teams don't just give away their high potential young players after one bad year (especially when they made coaching changes).

Good to hear about Norell. Between the two Robins, Norell seemed to have the edge over Press so far in development but it's a new year so we'll see. If one of Norell, Carlsson, or Dahlstrom can be Hjalmarsson-like and be an eventual solid 3D, then that would be nice. My guess is Carlsson may be that guy. Norell, Dahlstrom, and Press may top out at 5D or 6D if they ever make the Hawks.

The Czech free agent signee you're talking about is Kampf. My gut is that he won't amount to much. Last year the Hawks signed experienced Swedish forward Lundberg and said he was NHL ready as a grinder but he never got a call up and I think is no longer with the organization. Will Kampf be like Lundberg? Hope not but I don't have my hopes up for him.

Believe he is, but not really, because John hasn't move to D.

Carl turned out to be a big disappointment a couple years ago, and they sent him back to Sweden. He was back in Rockford, someone else will have to comment on his play last year there.

John has a great year in Medicine Hat, where he scored more than expected. Believe he is back in Sweden this year playing in the league under the elite league (which I found a bit strange considering his year in Medicine Hat)

OK - which teams in the West are that much (if at all) better than the Hawks - that much (if at all) deeper up front, at the blue line, in net - that they are sure to have better regular season records - and are locks to beat the Hawks in a tournament series?

Several possibly could, depending on how things work out, but....

We certainly all know Chicago's limitations, problems, opportunities, unproven young players - I'm no expert on other teams in the West, but if many things (not necessarily all things) break right under Q, there aren't that many better squads out there.

SBNation's picks for top college NHL draftees to keep an eye on. Hawks have 3 on the list: Krys (Boston U), Mitchell (Denver), and Sikura (Northeastern).

The best bet is to go to each team in the Tourney's website, as many teams hook live or delayed into the games...

I was aware of John and Carl and I know, too, that Runblad had been a forward. But I trust that you are on top of the facts about those particular prospects, so I must have got something mixed up. I can attest to being rather curious about Dahlstrom at Rockford last year, as he had previously been a disappointment in a late season Rockford peep. When Pokke, on second pair, was out, the Swedish dmen played the most of course behind Gustafsson. Gus is called a rag doll, but he is for most part good and trusted obviously by Dent. Dent tried to get Gus out there as much as possible in each game I saw in person or on the screen.

Norell played least. Press was most part in ECHL or a scratch. At times Norell and Dahlstrom were paired together. Norell appeared more concerned about not getting caught up ice, but was not unwilling to blast a puck. I didn't see enough of Norell to give a fair evaluation. My guess is that Press is less developed, perhaps the greater talent. How well does Press skate - can he carry the mail. That would be huge. As well as not being a rag doll and able to push back or strong enough to tie up a defender along the boards.

Why would Bowman sign marginal NHL bound talent? I mean, Lundberg did not stand out. But there was no genuine point producing, descent AHL offensive center in Rockford ...meaning each forward line was not really an ideal mix to play an offensive game when presented the opportunity. I know that L Johnson hopes to improve on last year. So now we have a young, improving Czech in Kampf. His ceiling.....I too do not have my hopes up but let's see how he does. There certainly is more offensive talent at Rockford in the upcoming season, although the center position may remain not a whole lot better.

Luis is a small fast, skill wing and Iocopalla is a lug with a shot. I wonder if he can keep up with the NHL pace and he is not a true board player, though he will look to make a play if he absolutely is not in position to shoot. Bondra is how good can he be? He just went up and down his wing and hardly anything else in very limited usage by Dent.

Late edit: I absolutely agree on your guess as to how these current Swedish dmen fare. The Blackhawks need someone who can carry the mail, who can skate like crazy. That is what Carlson and Krys can do. I am certain those two are being watched carefully to see how well other parts of their game progress

JJ,

Any word on potential PTOs? I just keep seeing a couple nice D-men unsigned. Maybe a Franson would be a nice upgrade over Rozy..

Agree, the Ice Hogs should field a better team this season. They're not going to compete for the Calder Cup but they should be more competitive and entertaining to watch.

Your description of Louis and Iacopelli sum up quite a few Hawks prospects: small and fast or lug with a shot. Either way, that one dimensionality isn't going to take a prospect anywhere but to a minor league career.

I would think the blueline prospects that have the skill set to really carry the mail are Carlsson, Krys, Mitchell, and Jokiharju. Can they play defense, though, and play well under pressure especially against NHL players? IMHO, that's what will significantly dictate their future.

, I think they will be fine, I will stick to my guns, Stan Bowman will make a Nother trade of significance, I do not believe he will let that Doe hang out there until the trade deadline when they are ready 3/4 of the way gone.

If not for Rozsival I think Stuart could be a decent 7D.

Edit: But I wonder if Polak would be a better option for a PTO.
