A former NHL coach pointed out to me that Risto was “giving up the blueline” to protect the net. He would only do that, the coach said, if he was told to do so
LOVE your coverage Mike, .. seriously, .. you belong on that list of INITIAL HB H O F'ERS, .. bringing all of us transplants out of the dark when it comes to this AWESOME team.

as pointed out by a well known analytics writer, he flourishes in areas where coaching has the highest effect.
Bylsma was never a good fit for a young team like the one we had but hes obviously not an idiot. most of us could identify the problem in its simplest form.
His deployment of ristolainen was atrocious but the real problem was there was no solution.
Lost in this conversation is that mccabe for a while there had good numbers too. Then the ice time caught up with him. Then they went up again and then towards the end of the season he had that week long brain fart.
We could call bylsma an idiot if he had better options and chose to ignore it to give these two way more ice time than they should have but thats not the case here.
Kulikov, gorges, franson, bogosian. Those were his alternatives. If there wasnt so much money on the line he probably would have quit on his own with that.

three players alluded to bylsma's coaching methods as not being ideal including the starting goalie who said they "didn't know how to play," a mobile defenseman who said "he felt handcuffed" and Eichel who was pissed off most of the season and let it be known...
in his most recent interview Eichel said, "I think it's good for everybody to have a fresh start. Guys are able to come in here with some new faces--a new general manager, a new coach--people who haven't made impressions on specific people in the locker room. And that can be a good thing for some guys who obviously didn't have the best relationships the last few years."
dude, i'm not totally an analytics hater, but really?...how much more of an indictment of Bylsma and his system do you need?
