You bring up a good point about the actual dollars spent, $5.5 million for 3 years or $1 million for 4. However the problem is that no teams right now need help getting to the cap floor, they are all above it. Maybe that changes next season if there is significant can growth. Maybe not.
If we are talking about Bolland, would it be worth trading Hossa for Bolland if Hossa cannot be unloaded elsewhere? Chicago may add a small sweetener, but its two years on the LTIR instead of 4. Plus Arizona saves $7 million in actual dollars. - DarthKane
Exactly. Chances of the contract being moved are more likely next off season when teams are budget planning. If that $1m is paid in a lump sum to Hossa it probably happens right after that - a la Krueger. That way the receiving team gets $5.5m in cap space for nothing in year 1.... and there will be teams seeing that as a value. |

I think this depends on a couple of things:
1. Is there even a remote chance Hossa can play (ie is there a potential new treatment / medication) on the horizon? If yes, keep Hossa. I know all signs point to Hossa being done, but it would not be prudent to consider the possibility that he could return.
2. What would the Hawks do with the cap space? There's no doubt they could spend it, but would the quality of player be worth it? Would they have to relinquish even more assets in a trade or wait until free agency next season? Unless Stan landed Tavares the list of UFAs next summer is underwhelming.
3. How many more years does the management think this team can contend? If the answer is 4 or less they'd have to consider trading Hossa even if the cost is high and the replacement forward isn't as good. The cost of doing nothing could be even higher. - DarthKane
My best uneducated guess regarding #1 would be, if he plays again ever, it would start with this year's playoffs.
a - if there ever was a 38-39 year old player that could come back after such a layoff, Hossa is the guy.
b - if there is to be healing for his skin condition, the current medications are a no-go. But, what if simply staying out of hockey equipment for this extended period of time makes the condition disappear?
Hossa last year was STILL the best backchecker I have ever seen. At 38 years old. |

Hawks prospects lose 3-2 to NRR yesterday. DeBrincat with a goal and assist. David Kampf also with 2 points. Line of DeBrincat/Kampf/Fortin sounded like was pretty good.
I saw the video of the one DeBrincat goal, a nifty pass from someone (can't tell who)...it says assists to Snuggerud and Press, both D-men. The pass was really sweet, may have been Press pinching in to make a nice drop to the Cat.
Off to coach my own hockey game...with broken-wristed son in tow. |

More genius. It's not about getting the play right.
Super. - hocktock
That's not the intent - although it will probably be the outcome on most nights.
The intent is to eliminate all the frivolous off sides challenges - the ones that cause 10 minute stoppages to check if a player is off side by an inch to reverse a goal.
Most coaches will let a goal stand without a challenge - unless it's an obvious off side - if he risks a shorthanded situation for that challenge. Just losing his only timeout did not seem to be enough of a deterrent.

True. But in Bollands case the team actually PAYS 5.5 million per year for the Cap hit of 5.5 million. In Hossa'a case they pay just 1 million per year for the 5 million Cap hit. For a floor team this is substancial.
Hardly comparable, Hossa's contrac t would be far more advantageous to a team wanting to hit Cap floor and pay as little REAL $$$$ as possible.
I don't think the Bolland contract in any way influeneces what the Hawks might have to give to move Hossa's contract. And, as I said....if they never move it they still recoup MOST of the cap space, it is just the inconvenience of having to navigate it a bit closer. - hawk35
Coyotes did not have to pay the full price of Bolland's salary - insurance covered all but 20%, so about $1.1m.

He didn't get an assist.
Fun fact, Gordie Howe only ever recorded two of his namesake hatties |

So you would rather have coaches disputing goals - and the idiot referees watching reviews for 10+ minutes to see if someone's skate was one inch off side - and after all that, the refs still get the call wrong?? Really???? |

No sir. I think they should respect the refs and/or if Toronto sees n offside they can call and reverse it. This is just a silly wrinkle in the rles that I don't like at all.

Think about this - the terminology they should use is "challenge which fails to reverse the call on the ice" will result in 2-minute penalty. Because, after a review, if it is clearly a bad call, and they still uphold the bad call, then can you call that a "failed offside challenge"? |

Anybody know anything about Cramarossa? Invitee to camp. Shoots L show up as C/RW on some of the prospect sites. Mr Ric or Wiz or maybe some in Ontario?
EDIT: hi Hock! Didn't recognize you without the hotdog avi! Also, the quote function is misbehaving this morning! |

PowerEnforcer is just getting into mid-season form for when the Hawks get a penalty called on them, well at any point during any game.
In other news, DeBrincat has been impressive in this camp so far. If he keeps this level of play up don't be shocked to see him in Chicago this year. |

Been in the OHL forever, but is still only 21. Has gotten better every year, but nothing earth shattering. He's organization depth in my view.
Kampf has seemingly done well at the prospects tournament. Not sure where he fits, but it's good to see some new faces showing up. Raddysh also acquitting himself well thus far. Want to see these guys against the big boys, not just other prospects, most of who will not be playing NHL hockey this year. |
