How is your hate meter? - Marwood
Moderate at the moment.
It will ratchet up once I receive my first email from the boss. Usually arrives around 7am every morning. I swear my boss is a robot that activates at 7am and just starts producing emails and doesn't stop until 6pm. I don't know what else he does. |

There's definitely a gap from the Gillis years between Horvat and the early kids Benning drafted. Benning made poor selections but that's neither here nor there.
In five years Horvat will only be 27 and he'll most likely be the captain of the team, his age in five years won't be an issue. - LeftCoaster
Horvat will be 27 in 5 years but he still is not Connor McDavid or Sidney Crosby. He will more than likely be still a second line center.
The poor selections do make a difference. I am not sold on OJ and JV is also a question mark. It is possible that Benning also created a draft gap. time will tell.

Some great teams of old that built through the draft, take the Islanders for instance, drafted for several years to build a core Vantel. Below is the core of the team that won four Cups, it took eight years to draft those guys.
1972 - Nystrom
1973 - Potvin
1974 - Gillies & Trottier
1977 - Bossy & Tonelli
1979 - Duane Sutter
The Chicago Blackhawks drafted Duncan Keith in 2002 and Patrick Kane in 2007, again that's six years of drafting....same deal. It takes time to acquire the right mix of players and talented players. |

You don't "need" a generational player to win a Cup, the Hawks don't have one and they won three of them.
They also missed with Cam Barker at #3 and Jack Skille at #7 during those years, you're bound to have some misses along the way.
I think Linden and Benning are idiots though...just so we're clear on that |

I wont comment on the Islanders seeing that is ancient history.
The Hawks also had Scotty Bowman we have rookie GM Jimbo who you have called more than once Dim Jim. Bowman is savy well spoken, not attached to players and not afraid to make big moves. Jim is none of that |

Bowman didn't work for the Hawks during that time, so I'm not sure where you're getting that from. Dale Tallon was the GM until 2009 when Stan Bowman took over.
Scotty was hired as a "special advisor" in 2008, all those guys had already been drafted by Tallon.
Edit: I just checked, in 2001 he was with the Hawks as a special assistant to the general manager for four seasons and director of hockey operations for the next two years.
So I was wrong... |

Scotty Stan and Dave Tallon all had a big hand in the Hawks three cups.
They also had an owner who drove he team into the ground years before so getting high picks and not caring about public opinion was easy

Yup....point still stands though, you can look at any team that won a Cup through drafting and it takes awhile to build that core. |

Yeah but we are now 4 drafts in and he still does not have a player drafted on the team while players like Tkachuk Nylander Larkin Pastarnak and Ehlers all having healthy careers. The clock is ticking |

So before we have seen JV play one NHL game this year (or Juolevi next year) the towel has been tossed already? |

I did not say that did I?
Lets be realistic though JV will most likely be a third line energy guy. OJ may be a top 4 but he is still years away. |

The last 5-6 teams to win got their best players through the draft. So... many. |
