He is an enigma. The kid produces at the NHL level and can't stick with a team. I think he's been on 5 different teams in 8 NHL seasons. Some of those teams being really bad yet his career totals aren't bad.
473 gp, 131 g, 82 a, 213 pts. with a career +13. - bloatedmosquito
It's odd I agree, but when given decent minutes (NYI, NYR) the guy can clearly score. Both he and Weal went from waiver pickups to significant contracts. I was simply pointing out it can happen. I know it's unlikely, but picking 2nd doesnt hurt. I'd take a flyer on rychel or kapanen 100%. Leafs will not Kap go, similar to Hyman (is still not waiver exempt) they will put them in the pressbox and not expose him. |

He can score it's just that he doesn't make anyone around him better. I think that drives a coach bonkers. |

The last 5-6 teams to win got their best players through the draft. So... many. - neem55
Respectfully...yes and no. Drafting is really only about 30-40% of the process. The rest involve many aspects that need to fall into place at the right time for championship status.
Just for Shi**ts and giggles I looked up the past 5-6 cup champs, and on average only 9-12 players on any given past few cup champs were actually drafted by their given teams:
2017 Pens - 11
2016 Pens - 11
2015 Hawks - 12
2014 Kings - 11
2013 Hawks - 10
2012 Kings - 10
Now of course there is a slight margin of error there but still, it all fits into that 30-40% range where the rest of those championship rosters are rounded out by trades...UFA's...undrafted players...so forth and so on.
So yes drafting a 'core' is important. But drafting alone does not win cups...way too many other factors at play. |

In baseball it happens all the time but in the NHL has there ever been a Cup winner that 'bought' their championship?

Not to distract from the riveting conversation about how bad the canucks are but every time someone on here posts the word Scraps all I can think about is that line in the Iron Man movie. Jeff Bridges played a good villain. |

Totally agree he pulled that role off well. I actually wasn't sold on the movie at first but after a couple viewings it's actually pretty well done. |

According to your sample the average of a roster that is drafted is 47% (10.83/23) which is the 40-50% range.
Some of those 47% are the teams very best players, PERIOD. Letang, Crosby,Malkin,Fluery, Murray, Kane, Toews, Crawford Seabrook, Quick, Doughty, Kopitar, Muzzin.
Do you have to add other players that could be considered core? I'd say yes, usually they add one or two. Hossa, Carter, Kessel I would say are core guys. I'm not denying you add to your core. I'm just saying you draft it first and then you tinker. All modern winners are built this way (and I very rarely use absolute statements, but I think I'm on strong ground here).
