I would say it was the most bought team. Zubov, Kovalev, Graves, Richter and leetch were all drafted though still. |

The 2001 Avalanche Cup team had a lot of purchases too. |

Good morning!
It's a strange kind of double-header today, with the kids in Calgary at 6 p.m., then the vets in Shanghai at 4:30 a.m.
Here's the rundown—I'm glad to see Chatfield back with Juolevi on the top pairing for the Calgary game.

They drafted thier 1c/2c/1d and traded top5 picks for guys like Roy. Also, the examples you guys are bringing up are before the modern era (ie the lockout) when a lot of things changed. I think there are likely a few outliers, but building through the draft and developing is the bread and butter of winning franchises. |

According to your sample the average of a roster that is drafted is 47% (10.83/23) which is the 40-50% range.
Some of those 47% are the teams very best players, PERIOD. Letang, Crosby,Malkin,Fluery, Murray, Kane, Toews, Crawford Seabrook, Quick, Doughty, Kopitar, Muzzin.
Do you have to add other players that could be considered core? I'd say yes, usually they add one or two. Hossa, Carter, Kessel I would say are core guys. I'm not denying you add to your core. I'm just saying you draft it first and then you tinker. All modern winners are built this way (and I very rarely use absolute statements, but I think I'm on strong ground here). - neem55
Your argument is strong when it comes to the core...that's about it.
And yes I did say there might be a slight margin of error on the percentages but on a 22+ man roster (with players changing all the time during the course of a season) my numbers aren't really that far off.
I would say you could make an argument that closer to 40% are players drafted by their teams but again...not enough (for me) to say that drafting is THE key element...but it is an important on when talking about the core.
I'm not a draftist so agree to disagree a bit here I guess but you have made some good points. |

With all the talk of Canadian teams getting in on Duchene ... does anyone think Tanev, Virtanen and a 2nd get it done ... or would it have to be a 1st?
Hate to give up one of our highest draft picks but Virtanen is classic case hometown selection goes awry. I think he still has a potential career, I don't think it's here. Too much history for a kid so young. Tanev is buy low, sell high. Whatever pick Colorado gets from Van, it's sure to be a high one. |
